County Official Proposes Bullet Tax To Curb Chicago Crime

As Chicago struggles to quell gang violence that has contributed to a jump in homicides, a top elected official wants to tax the sale of every bullet and firearm -- an effort even she acknowledges could spark a legal challenge.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will submit a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation's second-largest county, which encompasses Chicago.
Preckwinkle's office estimates the tax will generate about $1 million a year, money that would be used for various county services including medical care for gunshot victims. Law enforcement officials would not have to pay the tax, but the office said it would apply to 40 federally licensed gun dealers in the county.

Another tax is the liberal solution to any and all problems. In this case, it has the added benefit of discouraging people from defending themselves. I bet the criminals will be lined up to pay taxes on their weapons and ammo. What would have been unbelievable 20 years ago is now an everyday reality.

The tax would make them (the bullets)
sharper...LOL

This really makes a whole lot of sense...NOT! The residents can drive a few miles to the next county and avoid the tax altogether. I think in Cook County the farthest you can get from the county line is about 20 miles.

I bet the gangbangers can't wait to pay the taxes on their weapons and ammo. What insanity, what clear thinking on the part of law-makers. Just like firearm By-Backs this will have zero effect on crime and just make the honest citizen more financially responsible for what they have done and do.

There goes the "spray and pray" drive bys....its too stupid to even seriously consider. More taxes? THAT will solve things. And THATS how arrogant she is --- she KNOWS its going to be (successfully) challenged, but she wants to do it anyway.

All that will do is start a underground market for bullets.

That horse is out of the barn already. The best that can be done is to use Chicago as an instructional aid and example to other cities as to what not to become.Biblically speaking, the middle east has been in turmoil for thousands of years,so why waste our time trying to fix it?Likewise for Chicago, except Chicago has only been violent for 200 years with no sign of letting up.All efforts to fix it are commendable, but still useless and ineffective.

Yeah, that'll stop crime... Like they pay taxes in the first place! HaHaHaHa! Oh, what exactly is the tax on a stolen gun? Paid cash in the hood for it, and my dealer forgot to add tax to my sale! Should I report him?
