Remember the days of Three's Company, when the only way a man could convince the landlord to let him stay in an apartment with two single women was by pretending to be gay? Even when I first moved to New York in the mid-'90s, more than a few landlords told me I could only have male roommates and that female overnight guests were frowned upon. But times are changing and most people just expect their landlord to butt out, so long as they aren't knocking down walls or installing hot tubs in the bathroom. But there are still some people out there that don't want any unwed hanky-panky going on under their roof.

No, if I'm paying to live there, I don't think I should have to validate having guest, whether it be my significant other, sibling, friend, or otherwise.

This is a no brainer.
It's the landlord's property so they can dictate within the confines of the law as they see fit and if the renter doesn't like it than they can either move to a more tolerant landlord or buy their own place.
It is "their house" but if I am paying then they can butt out or I will move out.
Every state has a law about Illegal co-habitation, that is why your supposed to be married and you have to get a marriage license from the govt. If you’re breaking the law the property owner has to protect his interest.
When you don't own your residence than you are not completely in control of it plain and simple and if you don't like the rules then move.
