Motorcycle Accident On Old Ocean City Road

There's been an accident in Pittsville on Old Ocean City Road. A female rider has been taken to the Hospital as a priority 2 patient, non life threatening, thank God.

Folks, there's a LOT of motorcycles on the Eastern Shore this weekend. PLEASE take a second and third look before you go through a stop sign or traffic signal.

We were riding down Rt. 50 today and alot of the riders were really hotdogging it, going from one lane to the other actually cutting cars off. I think they have as much right on the road as anyone else, but some of their stunts are totally unnecessary and uncalled for. They need to heed and respect the laws also.

Amen to that! We had the same experience!

so do the pedestrians and bicyclist!

your right 5:18! they have no common sense at all. a bunch of geeks pretending to be bikers..all dressed up in costume's like it's hollaween.. most of them just started riding! lol..it is right comical watching the morons tho!

my boy wants to ride one (he's 16). I forbid it, hopefully he'll outgrow it by the time he's an adult. They are just too dangerous. people can't see them!

Is this the only motorcycle accident during bike week this year? Haven't seen anything on any of the other news outlets.

I had a car turn left in front of me today from behind a grain truck, never looked... luckily I was able to brake in time. Look out, drivers, we all want to live.

There was another nasty motorcycle accident this morning approx. 9:40 a.m.. It happened at that new light by Ruths Chris. From what i saw I don't believe the rider survived. Nobody has reported on that crash though.

Did they have to go from one lane to the next because someone was blocking a lane and wouldn't move out of the way?

That is usually the case more often than weavers.

Keep right except to pass. If you are not actively overtaking another vehicle, you are REQUIRED to be in the RIGHT lane.

Sometimes 'weaving' is the only way you can progress down the highway. Some people think if they are going the speed limit, or close to it, they don't have to move over.

Safe and efficient driving is a lost art. They took drivers ed. out of a lot of public schools and now there are mostly commercial businesses 'teaching' kids how to drive.

They don't care too much about teaching the correct and courteous way to drive as long as they collect their fees.

If you see someone in your mirror trying to get around you, why don't you simply move over and let them pass?

Well if you were driving so slow in passing lane you wouldn't have gotten your feelings hurt.

I personally welcome all bikers to the Eastern Shore.

3 bikers pulled out in front of my husband at rt 50 & walston switch road today. He literally came within INCHES of hitting all three of them. My husband was not speeding, he was slowing down for a stoplight. After this close call, all 3 of the bikers gave him the finger as they drove off. We try to stay around home on bike weekend. The seagull century is similar in the fact that some ride 3 abreast and we can't get around them. However, both are a great boost to our local economy so I will say that and end this post on a positive note. :-)

In fact, you are NOT required to be passing when using the left lane.

amazing how some of these bikers act. Bottom line if you tangle with a car you lose! Think they would be alot more careful! I see it every day on the western shore. Doesn't matter who had the right of way the bike always loses in this matchup! Of course if you have that hard of a time realizing this then maybe it's just darwinism at work!

Well hate to spoil the sad party here but I am working security in Ocean City for these events, and I must add these bikers are have behaved themselves very well in OC, and when I asked them questions they answered accordingly. I have noticed allot of people lack experience in operating their cars; 10 miles under the speed limit on Route 50 and so on!

10:12, read the traffic laws of MD. There is not a slower traffic stay right clause anywhere in it. Twice a day I get to ride behind usually female drivers slowing down and speeding up in the left lane depending on whether they are talking or listening on their phones. I don't want to roar down the highway, I just want to travel at a resonable speed related to the limit. I have a left handed family member who rides in the left lane because she says she feels more comfortable there, sheesh! They would do it even if there was a law. MD is one of few states that doesn't.

What do expect from people who want attention. 75% of the bikes are so loud you cant hear one another or anything approaching. I was at my kids peewee football game and a group went by the field and actually slowed down and ripped the engines in neutral. WTF grow up. The look at me I am on a Harley has grown old. Guess you did not get enough attention growing up. The bikes are awesome machines its the idiots riding them. The majority of the riders are respectful of the laws. It appears to me the younger crew have been watching Sons of Anarchy lol. Grow up

bypass - 70mph speed, and they were traveling approx 80. THAT is not safe, especially in a bike and moving around from lane to lane. people dont move over, cause the bikers slide in and out, cars are afraid to make the first move.

That's because your husband was driving slow in the "Fast" lane and holding up traffic. You and your husband should stay off the road more often.

September 15, 2012 10:12 PM's comment explains it all.

The law states slower traffic move to the right. My guess is you are one of those idiots that refuses to move to the right lane.

FYI....the lady who got struck while riding her Harley on Old Ocean City Road was riding with two other bikers, the driver of the car, stopped, looked at the motor cycles, hesitated a minute and went across in front of the Harley the lady was driving. I might add the driver of the car(a woman) was talking on her cell phone when she pulled in front of three motor cyles. I think the bikers that act like fools, never have a problem, it is the ones who are driving with care that get hurt....I am praying that this woman will soon be better, as she is in the hospital as you people are talking about some of the bike drivers you have seen. She did nothing wrong. A woman breaking the law, talking on her cell phone, pulled out and the girl went airborne and her helmet flew off...A lot of times, drivers don't pay attention either. I don't ride a motorcycle...but I look at least twice before I cross the road. My information came from an accident scene witness.

bad intersection there anyway, i always slow down at all of them even while on rt 50 and i have the right of way. i have been riding since 1980 and i did see alot of dumasses paying more attention to there buddy beside them or there broad on the back and most all of them had PENNSYLVANIA tags.all i can say is go back to your keystone state with your cvo, sand do not return please.

12:06 pm, pray tell- how could we drive in the fast lane when we were on walston switch road, driving towards the light on rt 50? Great assumption on your part. And FYI, the bikers were leaving the Sunoco station. They looked right at us and pulled out anyway, almost causing us to hit them. I realize not all bikers are like that. By your comment I am guessing you are a biker and maybe we hurt your feelings. :-)

Aside from attempting to make a left turn, why else would anyone be in the left lane, if not for passing?

Being you are attempting to JUSTIFY discourteous driving, I can only assume you are one of the offenders.

I guess you have never seen any legal signs, (white background with black letters), stating keep right except to pass.

BTW, FYI, signs that are configured this way; white background with black letters are the LAW.

Not to be confused with the SUGGESTIVE signs that are configured with a yellow background and black letters.

Also, the next time you are issued a ticket, (I am assuming you get them considering your bad driving habits), go down the list of infractions.

There used to be a check box for failure to keep right of center. I say used to because it's been at least over 9 years since I have gotten ANY ticket, and I am guessing it is still there.

I am now just wondering WHY there would even be any argument over this.

Are you and others so NARCISSISTIC that you feel entitled to drive in a left lane?

In your believing what you posted, it is quite obvious the state of Maryland, and perhaps others, need to re-educate licensed drivers, and educate current and future drivers over the correct way of operating a motor vehicle on the states' highways and byways.

Joe, do you remember a long time ago I sent you an email suggesting a section of your blog dedicated to driving and the various laws we all have to live by?

This person's comment is a prime example of what I was trying to get across to you.

Besides being law, it is also common sense...which isn't so common after all.

And even if we were to have a sudden education blitz on this and other vehicles laws, there would still be some people who would adamantly refuse to obey them.

But at least they could no longer claim ignorance of the law as an excuse.

10:12, read the traffic laws of MD. There is not a slower traffic stay right clause anywhere in it. 7:50 AM

I think YOU are the one that needs to do some reading.

Maryland is one of the states involved with a program, since 1997, named "smooth operator".

That is but one of the subjects you need to read up on. I suggest traffic laws in general, rules of the road, Maryland annotated traffic law codes, and even the driver's handbook would be a good place for you to start.

There is more shame in not following the law than there is to be ignorant of the laws.

You now have an opportunity to educate yourself to these laws and be a better driver.

Please utilize it.

This may be more reading than you like but this is one of those 'clauses' you said did not exist. Make sure you read the entire thing.

Md. TRANSPORTATION Code Ann. § 21-301 (2012)

§ 21-301. Driving on right side of roadway; exceptions

(a) General rule. -- On every roadway that is wide enough, a vehicle shall be driven on the right half of the roadway, except:

(1) While overtaking and passing another vehicle going in the same direction, under the rules governing this movement;

(2) Where there is an obstruction that makes it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the highway, but the driver of any vehicle doing so shall yield the right-of-way to any other vehicle that is traveling in the proper direction on the unobstructed part of the highway and is so near as to be an immediate danger;

(3) On a roadway that is divided into three or more clearly marked lanes for vehicular traffic, subject to the rules applicable to these roadways;

(4) On a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic; or

(5) On a roadway that is marked or signposted in a manner indicating that a contrary rule exists.

(b) Special rule for slow-moving traffic. -- On every roadway, except while overtaking and passing another vehicle going in the same direction or when preparing for a lawful left turn, any vehicle going 10 miles an hour or more below the applicable maximum speed limit or, if any existing conditions reasonably require a speed below that of the applicable maximum, at less than the normal speed of traffic under these conditions, shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

(c) Roadway with four or more lanes and two-way movement of traffic. --

(1) On any roadway that is divided into four or more clearly marked lanes for vehicular traffic and that provides for two-way movement of traffic, a vehicle may not be driven on the left of the centerline of the roadway, except:

(i) Where authorized by a traffic control device designating a lane to the left of the center of the roadway for use by traffic not otherwise permitted to use this lane; or

(ii) As permitted under subsection (a) (2) of this section.

(2) This subsection does not prohibit the crossing of the centerline of a roadway while making a left turn into or from an alley or a private road or driveway.

Heck, I had to go no further than Joe's own blog for what I was saying. Hence:

Getahum Bekele Heyi of Washington DC, arrested 9-11-12 for driving without a license and failure to drive right of center.

Also, something I found but did not post earlier is that it is illegal to speed up when someone is passing you.

It is also illegal to NOT move to the right when someone is trying to pass you.

It is also illegal to move back to right after passing when you are not clear of the vehicle you passed. (that means, when you whip your vehicle over sharply and close to the road hog you just passed, you are breaking the law).

If Joe posts all of these concerning the laws, hopefully I have educated a few about the correct way to pass and drive.

What you do with that information is up to you.
