Laboring Away: In An Ever-Changing Workforce, Some Collars Remain True Blue

American workers in the 21st century may be more likely to suffer carpal tunnel syndrome from typing on their keyboards than back injuries from heavy lifting -- but plenty of folks still do manual labor.

About 20,800 workers are employed in natural resources, construction, extraction, maintenance, production and transportation operations in Frederick County -- roughly 17 percent of the total workforce, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Just as Labor Day has evolved over the 130 years since the union-organized march that inspired it, so have the workers who sweat to earn a living.
