OCEAN CITY – The general employees of Ocean City have earned a spot
on this fall’s ballot as voters will decide their right to collective
bargaining in the next general election in November.
According to City Clerk Kelly Allmond, on June 28 Gregory DeMarco of
the Ocean City Employee Coalition served the City Clerk’s Office with a
petition entitled “Petition for Town of Ocean City Charter Amendment for
Fair and Equal Representation Rights For The General Employees of the
Town of Ocean City”.
On July 9, the Board of Elections Supervisors convened to review and
verify the results of the petition and during Monday night’s Mayor and
City Council meeting Board of Elections Supervisor Vicky Barrett read
into the record a letter of Certification of Petition Results written by
Board of Elections member Mary Adeline Bradford.

taxpayer funded employees uinionizing?
what could possibly go wrong?
anyone that votes for public unions should move to canada
For years, Dennis Dare kept these unions out. Now, the Town has changed direction and they got their foot in the door within months. Still, it remains to be seen how many current jobs go part time where they won't qualify for union participation.
Public unions are corrupt by design and will drain OC's budget.
Didn't Dennis Dare also increase the budget more than 50% in 5 years also 3:46 when OC had the windfall from the overinflated real estate market?
Now what? Condo's are now selling for 1/2 of what they were in those years.
If cities, towns, counties etc want to stay afloat in these uncertain economic times everyone must do their part and that includes government workers. To even entertain unionizing at this time is quite insensitive and selfish of them.
I've lost much respect for them.
The city should make as many jobs as possible part time or eliminate them all together if privatization is possible. If the city employees are unhappy, nervous whatever.... than we owe it to them to reduce their workload or find another solution so they can get on and leave the city and find a job they are happy with.
some descriptive words for these types: ignorant, deceived, duped and unaware.
just say NO to unions...you and your money will soon be parted. you'll see this after you get what you voted for. the county may have to make major changes in the way they employ and then you might not be part of the future plan.
Listen, and implosion is due. First there was the current employees keep their generous benefits and new employees get less. Next thing coming along was that the (current) guy on the garbage truck didn't make as much as an OC cop because the cops had a union. Now current full time employees are salivating about BIG increases in THEIR compensation. Now, there's a ton of retirees that work part time or seasonally without ANY benefits in OC. I am talking very highly educated and experienced people. They could care less about a union. No rocket science required here folks!
I look forward to voting "no".
Yes you five are right thats why it got the required signatures. Looks like the Wicomico County Council must be on line tonight. It will do the opposite it will not drain the budget. When state, county, city etc.. trys to balance the budget on the backs of the employees it is a disaster. These people took the job with the exspectation of a stated income. They own homes and pay taxes just like everyone else. You read these post and "My tax dollars" what the freak people city employees are not tax exempt.
Good for them Wicomico County will be right behind them. The bull crap that has gone on for years in Wicomico County needs to stop. Making one employee part-time so a certain person can get a 15% raise. Really that is o.k. That is why you need a union.
The passing over of 45 sworn deputies so you can hire your buddy. That is why we need unions. WE pay taxes just like evryone else and deserve a right to prosper just like you. When people take a career there is a pay stucture they base thier lives on. Purchasing a home, the childrens education etc.. when you screw with that because you can it is just plain wrong. We expect our elected officials to have a little integrity. Looks like Salisbury City Police better get on the wagon while the issue is hot. If everyone did what was right we would not need unions.
"When state, county, city etc.. trys to balance the budget on the backs of the employees it is a disaster. These people took the job with the exspectation of a stated income."
Name ONE state county or city that balanced the budget on the backs of employees and it has turned out to be the disaster you claim 10:37.
Go ahead-name JUST ONE!
AS far as expectations (you mean like entitled?) well guess what? Life is full of unexpectancies.
I'm sure the guy and gals who work in the few manufacturing plants left in the US expected to work 40 hr work weeks but out of concern for their fellow employees cut their hours back so no one gets laid off. Stories like this are rampant.
Many people have had it with the govenment employee entitlement attitude as apparent with what happened in Wiconsin.
Government employees seem to think they are irreplaceable but they are not. There is never ever a lack of a arse to fill their seats.
10:37 Unions are never ever needed and nor are employees who think they need one.
If your story about the sheriff is true (and there is no doubt that it is true since we've heard this complaint before) than get it out to the public and they (the voters) will take care of it by electing another sheriff.
Hurt them by the ballot box.
10:37, you were described in the 8:19 post. it's a shame you still don't get it. your expectation will not be met. unions will steal your money through "dues" and you will not get what you want.
locals can no longer put up will your entitlement mentality and the citizens will no longer put up with how their tax dollars are spent on union demands; so forget it. this is a waste of time and energy for all.
by the way, businesses have downsized or gone "out of business" all over the country thanks to our liberal president. hopefull he and his administration will be "fired" this november and escorted out of town in january. we can't take much more...
I know of several people who signed this but have stated that they will take great pleasure in voting against it.
It's not a very popular thing to be pursing at this moment.
The PEOPLE in O.C. should vote AGAINST their town's public employees becoming unionized. It will mean more pay and benefits for city employees at taxpayers' expense. Prices of everything is already too high in O.C.
I'm not so concerned about the prices in OC being too high as much as the entitlement mindset of these employees.
If they expected this and that and it's not turning out that way that is all a part of life. There are no guarantees. To pout and stamp their feet with demands is selfish in these economic times. OC businesses employee alot of service workers whose income has been drastically reduced and as someone say some are willingly without a second thought cutting back their hours so others will not get laid off.
