Maryland Sees Biggest Job Loss In Nation In April

Loss of 6,000 jobs comes as most states expand

Maryland shed 6,000 jobs in April, the federal government said Friday — the largest monthly loss in the country as most states gained.

Thirty-two states and Washington, D.C., added jobs in April, according to the estimates from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The figures, which are preliminary and adjusted for seasonal variations, paint a much less rosy picture of Maryland employment prospects than in recent months. In April, the Labor Department said the state had seven straight months of job gains. Now, in addition to the dour April numbers, the agency has revised downward its estimate for March, saying the state lost 600 jobs rather than adding 1,500.

The estimates are based on surveys, and revisions are common as the agency gathers information from more employers. But the results can create whiplash for workers, employers and policymakers trying to understand where trends are headed.

Maryland's unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent in April from 6.6 percent in March, partly because more Marylanders joined the labor force of people working or looking for work.

Despite the monthly drop, the state had about 34,000 more jobs in April than it did a year earlier, the Labor Department estimated. That number is not adjusted for seasonal variations.

I thought that trip omalley, family and a bunch of state bureaucrats (over 100 in all) took to India was going to bring jobs to Maryland by the boatload.
omalley is either so grossly incompetant or he is a pathological liar.

Of course that trip to India brought jobs to Maryland, you are just not seeing how it actually works!

The companies in Maryland hire people in India to answer phones or operate computers tied by internet to places in Maryland. Once a month the companies in Maryland write big checks and mail them to India to pay the workers. So you see postal employees in Maryland are getting additional work, along with companies that print paychecks and don't forget the accountants in Maryland who keep track of all the money flowing out of state. See, you just have to look at it correctly.

I concur with your opinion that O'Malley is a liar. Just yesterday after the BLS released their employment data - O'Malley quoted the following;

"This was a disappointing month of job creation in what remains the best quarter of private sector job growth since 1999, and our second best quarter since BLS started measuring in 1990. Maryland's businesses are in the midst of their best start of the year for job creation in over a decade, creating 15,700 since January."

O'Malley cannot be trusted. He distorts the truth and ought not be allowed to hold office. His manipulation of data is autrocious.

This is exactly the reason I do not like or trust O'Malley - he tries to sugar coat the goriest of news.

Same way with the school teacher pension shift. The public is not aware of the truth. Truth is - the State blew the money in bad investing. Some of the money invested ended up in the European theater.

You cannot trust O'Malley, Miller, Busch, Conway, Mathias, Cane, or any of the democratic leaders. And you cannot trust some republicans including former Governor Ehrlich.

It seems like they will say just about anything to protect their status quo.

Seriously the only thing this Omalley is proficient at is the BS.
His one and ONLY solutions to the budgetary problems is to either raise taxes and fees or implement new ones. Anyone is capable of doing that-it's not rocket science and takes no brain power. That should be the last resort not the only answer.

I agree with you 4:40. It is a no-brainer when I can walk into the Home Depot & Lowes and there are more employees than there are customers.

I knew they have been lieing for a long time now. When O'Malley was running for Governor he said he was going to make it easier for new businesses. All I have seen are them fleeing from Maryland. Now the Bureau of Labor statistics only confirms what I have felt all along. And what does O'Malley do - distorts the stats and tries to convince people otherwise.

If Maryland's economy is so robust as O'Malley claims, then why did he call a special session to raise taxes. The administration told us that jobs equates to increased revenues. If that was the case, then why did we get tax increases.

Pretty much sums it up... March went from +1500 to -600, and then this. We are to believe that when Omallet sez jobs gained means the exact opposite. He only lies when he's saying something, never anytime else.

LOL-- 3:25! Omalley needs to hire you as his Minister of Propaganda ummm I mean spokesperson!

9:33 - You are right, that is the way O'Malley works. He'll make you think that his trip overseas was a success - then you'll find out in a round-the-bout way that was his intention all along - to outsource Maryland's jobs. Then - he'll claim his trip was a success.

He is such a swindler - one of Maryland's finest.

9:27 Wait just a minute here.

What is the difference in O'Malley and Ehrlich?

O'Malley raises tag registration & fees and says it is a tax increase.

Ehrlich on the other hand raises tag registration & fees and says it is just a fee and not a tax increase.

Either way - when I look into my hip pocket the same amount of money has disappeared. One claims to be a progressive and the other a conservative. So you answer me - which is better for Maryland?

I don't believe O'Malley fares quite as well with the Chinese. You see when he went to China he informed the Chinese that Maryland was going to be big market for their renewable energy solar panels. So the Chinese started shipping their products in large quantities in containerbox ships. Then O'Malley turns coat on them and accuses them of illegal dumping - so he imposes a 296% trade tariff on the Chinese made modules and confiscates the money and diverts the funds to shore up the school teachers pension fund.

He then claims to Marylanders that his his trip to China was a success in that it generated millions.

I guess it is all about perception.

The governor also ended a contract with catalyst drugs who provided the state employees with prescription drug coverage. Catalyst was based in Rockville. The New company is Express Scripts in St Louis MO. So more Marylanders out of a job. Funny thing too our coverage always changed on July 1 however Express Scripts started May 16. Does that mean the state is still paying Catalyst for that 6 weeks?
