Anne Arundel Officers Seek Handicapped Parking Violators

Drivers plead their cases as Operation HIDE 2011 draws to a close
It was just after noon on a recent weekday, the parking lots at the Annapolis Westfield Mall were already full, and a woman in a dark sedan weaved through the swelling traffic, looking for a place to park.

Jessica Lawrence, a Glen Burnie resident, saw what she was looking for — a single, empty handicapped space near the front entrance to Sears.

She pulled in, killed the engine and breathed an apparent sigh of relief.

I love it ! Its about time people started paying for their lazyness and for breaking the law. People need to stop thinking of me,me,me and stop thinking the world exists for them and start thinking of others.

This is great but only solves the problem of illegally parking in handicap spaces. I would like to see all current handicap cards recalled or invalidated. Then establish very strict guidelines for obtaining a handicap card and make everyone reapply. Punish the doctors who rubber stamp the handicap status for patients.

I see to many healthy people getting out of a car with a handicap card. I've even question some and in every case they blurt back that they have problems with their back, leg or had surgery. If this is the case we all need a handicap card because at one time or another our back hurts, or our leg hurts or we had surgery for something. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

I agree that the law should be a little more accomodating to those picking up disabled passengers but I don't know how to do it without it causing a giant loophole for the true offenders to use.

I have a friend that is wheelchaird bound. This is a frequent problem for her. One time she double parked behind the offender. Wehn she returnd they were, of course, fuming. But after they watched her pull herself into the vehicle, fold up the wheelchair and put it in the space behind her, struggling all the way, they had nothing to say. Hoepfully they learned something that day and have not continued to abuse those spaces.

This is good, but do we really need a task force for this?

It is true a lot of people abuse the placards. But there are some people that are handicaped but they are not in a wheelchair. There are people that have trouble walking because of knee or hip replacements. There are some that have had heart attacks or breathing problems. Just because you don't need a wheelchair can be decieving at times.

It's just as bad in Salisbury as any place else. Its a shame that people are just plain lazy and the other problem is that doctors hand them out like candy. I enforcement, enforcement, enforcement and give them a hefty fine!

Two things--- you have no idea what the handicap is, you are just angry that YOUR fat ass has to walk 50 more feet. You are probably one of those people that will hold a whole line of traffic up at the store while you wait for someone to back out of a spot thats really close to the entrance, instead of just parking and WALKING some of that fat ass off. Further, why can't the police just enforce the law without doing "Operation" this or that? MILTARY UNITS do "operations" and "campaigns". Does it enhance their self-esteem? Make 'em feel like "warriors"? Tough guy enforcers? What?? Hannibal, Pershing, and Patton ran "campaigns". As a citizen in a free country (at least, in theory), I find it insulting that we are the targets of "Operation (fill in the blank)" or the latest "Campaign"....like they are conquering territory or subduing an enemy. Wait. Hold on. Maybe thats the whole idea....

IF they got a placard, there is nothing you can fine them for. What makes any of you qualified to determine who needs a placard anyway?

None of you are doctors and don't even know these people. You're just jealous your lazy butts have to walk.

Mind your business and take the plank out of your eye.
