WI HI Football Teams Off To A Great Start

Last night BOTH Varsity and Junior football teams of Wicomico High School won their first games.

The varsity score was 2 to nothing and the junior teams score was 3 to nothing!!

Just ONE more game closer to taking on Delmar High School!

Maybe a scrimmage, but Wi Hi's first game isnt until September 2, against Snow Hill. And they don't play Delmar at all.

Wi-Hi and the other Maryland Bayside teams are afraid to play Delmar in a real game. They know it would be an automatic loss for them. In fact, most teams in Delaware won't schedule Delmar out of conference for the same reason. As a result, Delmar must travel all the way to Baltimore for their first two games this year. Wi-Hi barely beat Woodbridge last year and Woodbridge is the second worst team in Delmar's conference.
Yesterday, Delmar destroyed Parkside in a scrimmage. The only time Parkside scored was when Delmar put in their second string and JV players against Parkside's varsity starters.

I will give Wi-Hi some props though as they have some good young players coming up and should have a good team next year and the year after. However, from watching them play the last several years, Wi-Hi is an undisciplined team and that hurts them from becoming a very good team.

If you have never been to a Delmar game on a Friday night, do yourself a favor and go experience it for yourself. Salisbury teams might have 200 people come to their games, while Delmar will typically have 1,000 people in attendance.

Delmar scrimmages Bennett next, and then Cape Henlopen. There was talk of a regular season game, but Wi High's open date was already scheduled by the Wildcats with St. E's. After what I saw Delmar do to Parkside on Sat. I would think the Indians should be glad to wait at least one more year.

All of the Salisbury teams have refused to play Delmar for years. There is no competition in the bayside conferenc that can handle Delmar's teams. Delmar has to travel to Baltimore, PG County and Wilmington to find enough teams to play them just to fill their schedule. As a once Wi-Hi coach told me, we dont want our boys to get down on themselves by loosing to Delmar since they are so close.

Give me a break! Delmar is not all that! And, they haven't been either. Delaware football is NO comp for MD football. The only reason Delmar does well at all is becuase they recruit from out of their district when WiHi, Bennett and Parkside teams cannot and the talent is divided. These are unbelievably stupid posts.

You will see the Salisbury teams dominating Delmar in the next few years now that their is a well run youth football program in Fruitland. Before we had so many high schools in Salisbury Delmar couldn't carry Salisbury's jock strap.

How, many football champtionships has Parkside, Bennett and WI-Hi have combined? Thats what I thought....Delmar has been the conference champ on the state champ every year for the last ten years. No football program on Marylands Eastern shore can compare to the Delmar program and Coach Hearn. You can take the best of all of the players from WI hi, parkside, bennett, snow hill, stephen decatur, washington, cambridge, easton, kent island and that team could not beat Delmar. Unless your from Delmar you just don't know. How many Salisbury football games have 1000+ fans at every game rain, snow or shine the Delmar fans are there.

Bring on the haters, you can not make excuses for Delmar's winning record. Plain and simple they are the best.

YOu go, 5:42! Fear the Wildcats!

Salisbury has three schools within 2 miles which divides the talent Delmar which used to be dominate only has one school in a large area to draw and they also had the Pop Warner league to prepare them for High school ball. But now that fruitland has proven to be a huge success Delmar will be soon forgotten.

Delmar is ranked 21st in the tiny state of Delaware...lol there's your power house.

Anonymous said...

Anon: 6:49 rankings mean nothing, Delmar has consistantly not ranked in the top 5. But rankings mean nothing at the begining of the year when at the end of the year you are Ranked #1 with the trophy to prove it. Like I said haters will hate. All you Salisbury/Fruitland supporters speak to your coaches and get them to get on the bus and come north to the house that David Hearn built. The team and the fans will welcome you and show you are power and are Delmar spirit. When you loose just please go home graciously and be a good sport about it.

Delmar wins because of superior coaching, period. If you think the Salisbury schools don't have kids transfer for sports, you're crazy. The best players Wi-Hi has had in recent years were kids who were supposed to go to Bennett(Knox and Dave Brown). Parkside's best lax player Kylor Berkman, was supposed to go to Bennett as well. So, the talent being divided up is no excuse for them being inferior to Delmar. All three schools are still bigger than Delmar which has about 600 kids in their high school. The programs that the Fruitland teams play against are a joke.

Again the coaching and discipline of Delmar sets them apart. Yesterday Parkside got off the buss and waltzed over to the field with no equipment on and stood around chit chatting until Delmar came out. Delmar came out of the locker room with all equipment on, in two lines led by the seniors ready to go. The Parkside players thought they were going to do well since Delmar was smaller than Parkside. Then Parkside slowly got dressed and walked over like lost sheep to warm-up. Delmar players don't sit on the bench and don't take off their helmuts during the game. Everything they do has a purpose and the entire team knows what to do and what is expected. Parkside has talented players and were much bigger than Delmar, yet Delmar whipped them badly yesterday. So, you can have youth leagues if you want, but the coaching at the high school is what sets Delmar above the competition.

We all know del mar has to go 150 miles away because no 1 wants to play with a bunch of crybabies huh karen

Delmar doesn't get rated as high in state rankings because other schools are much larger. It would like Snow Hill winning a state championship and being ranked lower lower in the state than a 4 A school like Arundel. Arundel would be ranked higher because they are a bigger school.

Delmar had a down year last year and still made it to the state semi-finals.

Delmar is a very small school that pulls from a smaller group of kids than any of the three Salisbury schools. Bennett is a 3A school and The other two are 2A schools. If Delmar was in Maryland, they would be a small 1A school.

If MD football is so much better than Delaware as you claim. Then ask the coaches around here why they won't schedule Delmar anymore. They know the truth. I'll even bet Stephen Decatur losses to Indian River this year as well. Delmar plays three MD schools this year, we'll see how they do.

BTW in Delaware private schools compete against public schools for Championships. Those private schools do recruit and the ones in Wilmington pull kids from the Philly area.

Delmar will win their 7th State Championship this year.

The Salisbury schools have had the Salvation army youth program and Wicomico Pop Warner for years, so they have no excuse. Delmar's Pop Warner team and middle school team are not very good and don't win many games. Coach Hearn and his staff make Delmar High School the power that they are every year.

Talk to any current Parkside player or coach after Sat. ask them about the quality of Delmar,s program. And, what is this recruiting for a large area? Last I heard, Delmar was the second smallest school in the State. Look, it is refreshing to hear a few people stand up for the Salisbury three high schools, the kids deserve your support. I think you might be better served to look to Delmar as something to model. School uniforms, teachers and administrators that care, and great community support.

Nobody goes to the Salvation army anymore the program is a joke so is Pop Warner. Delmar is ranked low because that's were they belong as for Parkside they have always had a crappy team. Delmar has a huge area to pull from but it won't matter in a couple years.

Well said 9:22.

Look out Bennett on Friday at 4:30, Delmar is coming and they have bad intentions.

You gotta love football in Delmar. They moved trick-or-treating a couple of years ago to Nov 1st as they were playing Laurel on Halloween night. Then after winning the State Championship in 2009, they canceled school on Monday. No school in honor of winning the State Championship! The Fire Dept. escorted the team all through the town with sirens wailing and horns blowing after the win. How many other towns and school districts would move Halloween and cancel school for football? Certainly not the Wicomico BOE.

The kids at Delmar would run through a brick wall for Coach Quillin at Delmar. They love him and he will do anything for those kids.

I go to as many games in Salisbury as possible and the problem is the kids think they are in the NFL already and don't play as a team and respect the coaches.

9:42, you're a joke. Delmar has only half the students of even the smallest school in Salisbury. I coached at the Salvation Army and most of Wi-Hi's good players played at the Salvation Army.

I believe that Bennett won a couple of MD State Championships in the 80's when there were 3 schools in Salisbury, so your argument of the talent being split up has no validity. So, why can't they win now?? You must be the person who runs the Fruitland program to think it is going to make such a difference. Delmar will still be better. Come see Delmar win this year on a Friday night and you'll see what a joke football in Salisbury is. Several years ago Wi-Hi hosted a playoff game against a team from western MD and the visiting team had many more fans than Wi-Hi. It was an embarrassment. So, which team is going to rise up and benefit from the Fruitland program? Bennett?

The Delaware state rankings are done by the Wilmington paper. Two years ago, when Delmar won their STATE RECORD SIXTH state championship (and 4th since 2000) that newspaper picked them to lose in every round of the playoffs and the state title game. There is a huge bias in the way that paper ranks teams because most of the people that buy their paper are from New Castle or Kent (DE) County.

The fact remains that there are ZERO other high school football teams on Delmarva who have been as dominant over the past 10-15 years as Delmar has.

Does that mean they'll be good this year?

Absolutely not.

Each team, each year has to achieve on its own... but I do think it is a great indicator of what might happen.

Finally, Delmar absolutely does not choose from a larger pool of kids then any Salisbury school. There are only 4600 people (both sides of the line- only 3003 on the MD side) (2010 census) in Delmar. There 30,343 in Salisbury according to the same census! Also, about 5% of Delmar kids go to Wi-Hi!?! (who is pulling county-wide?) How anyone could claim that Delmar has some sort of large scouting area is just showing their ignorance.

Whatever school you went to didn't teach English and spelling very well, if at all.

That said, I assume the commentors on this thread are adults. I can't really be sure going by the posts.

School spirit is one thing, and a good one, but you guys are extreme.

Reminds me of kids teasing each other. My daddy can whip your daddy. My dog is bigger than your dog. My team is better than your whole state. etc etc. Blah.

Good example you guys are setting. The season hasn't even started yet and you are talking trash already. lol. Bragging rights is one thing but come on. A little humility now and then is a good thing too. And better sportsmanship as well.

Have fun, enjoy. Just don't kill anyone over a high school football game.

It isn't just a high school football game, it is a community event, a source of community pride, and a lack of respect. Whoever plays Delmar always looks down on them. When we travel to the western shore they think of us as Eastern Shore rednecks. Northern Delaware looks down on slower lower DE and the Salisbury folks are clueless about Delaware football being better than any football in the Bayside. So tiny Delmar takes great pleasure in beating the teams and fans that look down their nose at all of us. Yes we like to brag about our team that is always smaller then their opponent but prevails time and again, just like the town of Delmar. We support our school and the football team, maybe Salisbury would be a better place if they supported their schools as well.

I have five grandkids who have attended, or will attend, DMSH. One is currently playing Delmar football. As 6:51 says, with Delmar football is a community event. I have never seen more devoted fans than in Delmar. It's something you have to see to believe. I taught school in another county, and the bleachers were always half-full for games. Not so, Delmar. So, yes, fear the Wildcats!

Mr. McGuire,
I can only assume this comment belongs to you and you are referring to me since I disagreed with your text messages you were sending me yesterday.Your text announcing that they "won their first game" was incorrect. Wi-Hi had a scrimmage. That is basically a practice. I am not saying Wi-Hi doesn't have a good program, but a scrimmage cannot always be used to gauge a teams's success in the regular season. Second, Mr. McGuire, I thought it should be brought to your attention that Wi-Hi was not on the schedule for Delmar this year, so I am not sure why you think your son's team is one step closer to "kick in del mar high school Ass" as you so eloquently put it in your text to me. Further, when I tried to explain that to you, you said that if Wi-Hi made it to States, they are "gonna see del mar". I pointed out that that was inpossible since Delmar and Wi-Hi will NEVER meet in post season play as the schools are located in two different states. You insisted that "yes in under the right circumstances they can play 1 another". I would think, Mr. Mcguire that if you want to continue following your son's sports interests, you would want to know how things work. In addition, since you may consider running for office in Delmar again, I think it would be beneficial to understand that the high school is located in Delaware. Our Maryland students are able to attend Wicomico High or Delmar High. It is THEIR choice and I am proud of ALL of our Delmar students and their achievements, no matter which school they decide to attend. I would never try to pit neighbors against each other and if you hold any sort of political aspirations in that town, it would behoove you not to either.

2-0 and 3-0 in a scrimmage? Are you sure? Did they just score 2 and 3 times? Or was the score really as reported? Here is a brief breakdown for anyone who doesn't know:

6 points = TD

1 point = extra point for kicking a ball between the uprights following a TD (the uprights are those tall thingies at each endzone.)

2 points = safety OR 2 point conversion

3 points = field goal

So, I would ask again, did Wi-Hi score twice? or did their points come as a result of the above?

I was thinking the same thing
10:18. Must have been a pretty boring scrimmage. Sounds like someone doesn't know the game of football.
