Missing Cat

Joe:

I hope you will post this, as I have seen posts of a similar nature on Sby News in the past.

Our cat, Gavin, has been missing since Saturday night and we are looking for help either getting him back or finding out where he is and what happened to him.

He was last seen Saturday night at around 9:00PM when he was let out to do his business, chase a squirrel, or do whatever it was that he wanted to go out for.

Gavin is a male domestic short hair cat, just shy of being a year old, and is entirely jet black in color.  He has a pinkish/reddish collar with rhinestones and a small jingle bell but no tag.  There is a patch of white fur on his chest roughly the size of a quarter and on his left ear is a small spot (no bigger than the eraser on the end of a pencil) with no hair.  He has not yet been de-clawed or neutered, as he spends most of his time indoors.

He was last seen at our home in the wooded section at the far end of Mar-Lynn Drive, off of Conelly Mill Road, so we hope someone in the Driftwood Estates, Breckenridge, Wood Creek, Shell Road, Wood Creek Parkway/Lynch Drive, Archid Drive, or Greenway areas of Delmar, MD will have seen him and be able to help.

Anyone with any information or otherwise able to help can contact me at 443-497-0878 any time of any day.

Thank you for helping spread the word.

Let me be the first to say, I hope Gavin is returned home safe and sound. It is great that you keep a bell on him. FYI intact male cats will roam when "love is in the air". Also, there seems to be a resurge of rabies lately so be sure he is up to date with his shots.

Thanks, 11:54. He has had a rabies shot but we have not put the tag on his collar as it is starting to get worn and we have a new collar for him and were going to put it on him sometime soon.

I feel sorry for the loss of your cat-- for you, because you miss him, and for him, because it's a dangerous world for wandering pets. When will people realize an intact animal will roam and more than likely add another litter of kittens that will suffer much hardship and pain.

Realistically, over 12 years, one unspayed female, with all her unspayed female offspring, reasonably can be expected to be responsible for over 3200 kittens if there is no human intervention.

so...letting your unaltered dog or cat out the door to roam free means you are responsible for the very sad life 3200 dogs or cats suffer. Please be responsible....spay or neuter your pets. If you don't love your animal enough to do this, then don't have an animal.

An "indoor cat" is only a cat who lives entirely indoors and never goes outside. Don't fail to have your cat fixed due to the fact that it's an "indoor cat" when you obviously let it ourdoors all the time!

He was found and will eventually be okay. He was struck by a car on a road in the Delmar,MD area. A couple of good samaritans (the only info we could find, no names) found him and took him to Pets ER. He was treated for a broken pelvis and other injuries. Then he was sent to the Humane Society for safekeeping (Pets ER is not a 24-hour operation) and to see if the owners came forward. Someone from Pets ER saw the post that Joe put up for me and they called me to tell me what they knew about what they thought was our cat. We picked him up from the Humane Society on Tuesday (they are closed Mondays) and on their advice we immediately took him to his vet, Pet Medical Center, in Delmar. Other than his injuries from the accident (including a very manly-looking scar on his right rear leg) he was given an excellent prognosis and should be recovered within 3 months. He is now getting lots of love and comfort at home - strictly indoors. He's going through enough right now, but sometime after he has recovered from all this he will be getting neutered and implanted with an ID chip (surprisingly affordable). Thank you Joe for providing this service that we all hope we will never need but sometimes do.

720PM, as was clearly stated in the post, our cat is a male. There is a time and a place for the spay/neuter message (which I don't disagree with), but when someone is grieving for a lost/missing pet that is neither the time or the place.

1039AM, bite me! He was found and taken in by us as a kitten. We were going to visit my father shortly before he died and as we were backing out of the driveway, we saw him climbing his way back down a tree. Who knew cats could climb DOWN trees?! He is not put out to roam free, and don't talk to me about loving my animal.

935PM, kiss my ass! I never said he was an indoor cat, although he will be after this unless he is with one of us on a leash. Where do you get the nerve to say he is obviously let out all the time? His food and water are inside (leave it outside and you'll attract raccoons and everything else) and he has a litter box inside as well. Next time you feel like jumping to conclusions so quickly, make sure you're at the end of pier or alongside a busy highway before you do it.

Apologies in advance to Joe if you feel you need to edit some of my stronger comments. A couple of these people and their comments show me why your blog and its readership are held in such low regard by some people out there. I rarely agree with those people and I thank you for the part you played in helping us find our cat.

So glad you found your kitty and it's amazing how inappropriate that people can be with their comments. Good job putting them in their place. Some people just like to be ridiculous! Your kitty is very lucky and the important thing is that he is home :-)
