Maryland Governor Promotes School Breakfast Programs

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Martin O'Malley is promoting school breakfast programs.

O'Malley will host breakfast with school superintendents, principals and food service providers Wednesday at the State House in Annapolis.

It's part of the governor's Partnership to End Childhood Hunger. O'Malley says he wants to end childhood hunger in the state by 2015.

School breakfast programs are great, but have you seen what they serve? It is awful. I am sorry but a pop tart is a pop tart and they are bad for you.
With the new guidelines set by the FDA recently hopefully this will change.

9:22- You and I are paying for it!
They can take what they get. If they don't like it, they can eat at HOME (like they should).
This makes me crazy.
Why are we spending MILLIONS to feed everybody's kids while the parents use the grocery money to buy lottery tickets, Blackberries, cigarettes ($4/pack??!), crack and movie DVDs.
I'm sick of this.

Let their PARENTS feed them!!
And don't go on about how they can't. They don't because they know we will.

How much money is spent in Wicomico alone on feeding children in the schools?
Give us a number.

Free/reduced breakfast; free/reduced lunch.
And they even want to continue to do it when school isn't in session.

Funnel cake for breakfast is not healthy! I could not believe when I saw that sitting on the table. Another issue with the breakfast in the classroom thing is the milk is left out for upwards of 45 minutes. I know my children have received spoiled milk at lunch several times after being a pilot school to this program. The reason is the milk is left out in warm/hot classrooms for an extended period of time, put back the fridge after wards and then served at lunch.

950-
922 here (me)

The liberal in me is peaking out for a minute.
My 3 kids are still in grammar school here in the county. Their school provides a free breakfast for all because they have over 50% on reduced lunch programs, I think. I have seen some of the kids who come into the school, half dressed, not clean and still only 6 years old. It is terrible and they are victims of an irrespondable parenting. We have already assumed the role of caretaker, teacher and social worker, that shoulder to cry on and so on at the schools, this has been acknowledged already.

All I am asking is that if they are going to provide a free breakfast, let it be of one that is healthy. Since we are already raising this % of children, why not do it right? Why not try to instill something healthy into their lives? My kids don't get poptarts and crap at home because it is not healthy. I for the life of me cannot understand why the schools provide this crap. I took it a step further and asked our administration the same question, the response I got was "we don't have any control of what comes into our school, that is mandated by the county and state". Way to pass the buck! This not my problem attitude has to stop. Every time we turn our cheek because we feel it is not our problem, it years down the road comes back to haunt us.

Good, 11:37. Well said.
But let's go right to the source if we're going to fix this.
All this is a product of our welfare state.
Paying people to have lots of illegitimate children, then shielding them from all the consequences of their actions.
If you really want to fix the problem, work on the cause, not a few symptoms.

WTF are you talking about!! If someone can't afford to feed their kids then they need to keep their legs closed and work for a living. I am sick and tire of welfare of any kind! You liberal idiot!!

You think feeding the children pop-tarts and food like that is sick, watching how much food and milk is THROWN AWAY will really make you sick. The kids race to get into the cafeteria ( or classroom ) to get their breakfast, and many don't even eat it. They put it in their backpack, give it to a friend, or simply throw it away. Even unopened milk boxes are thrown away. Same scenario at lunch, race to get into the lunchroom, make a mess of their lunch (yes, I've seen them dump the milk all over the plate and ruin what they are given), refuse to eat it, or just throw it away.
If they are receiving a 'free' breakfast or lunch, they should have to sit there and eat it. They don't like what's served? Too bad! I believe if they refuse to eat it, take them off the program!
