(CUMBERLAND, MD) – After locating and notifying family, Maryland State Police, in cooperation with the Maryland Division of Correction, are releasing the identity of the state prison inmate found murdered last week.
The victim is identified as Blas Ramon Mata Aguilar, 41. He was an inmate at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. According to the Division of Correction, he had been serving an 11-year sentence for sexual assault and other charges. He had been an inmate in the Division of Correction since 2004. The victim’s ex-wife and daughter were located and notified today by authorities where they live in New York.
Aguilar was found deceased in his cell by correctional officers at the Western Correctional Institution on the morning of February 2, 2011. An autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled his death was a homicide.
Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, with assistance from the Internal Investigative Unit of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services are continuing their investigation, which includes numerous interviews and a review of evidence from the prison. No one has been charged at this time. No additional details regarding the investigation are able to be provided at this time.
