Hedgecock: Gettin' Fat, Gamblin', And Cruisin' On Food Stamps

Poor?  Still want to eat out, gamble at the local Indian Casino, or take a Caribbean cruise? Never fear. Just sign up for Food Stamps.

Here's how it works.

Matching hungry Depression-era Americans with farm surpluses motivated the first Federal food stamp program in the 1930s. Today, to remove the stigma of paying at the supermarket with the stamps, some 120 Million Americans get Electronic Benefit Transfer debit cards (EBT) from the renamed Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

Applications are pouring in every day as radio and TV ads, paid for with taxpayer funds, inform the world how to get free food.

Since the states administer the program for the Feds, individual states have gotten creative.

California, for example, calls the program CalFresh conjuring images of organic, wholesome, vegan diets for the poor, who no longer have to worry about starving and can concentrate instead on getting "medical" marijuana. California is the green state, you know -- we have even recycled our Governor.

In California, the poor can use the EBT card at the farmers' market, and the flea market, and even dine out. Under a new state law, counties can permit the use of the CalFresh EBT cards at approved restaurants.

The San Diego County program limits the EBT restaurant use to seniors, the disabled, and the homeless. The San Diego list of approved restaurants includes KFC, McDonald's, and other fast food franchises. So, at least in my home town, obesity is not such a problem that it can't be subsidized by the government.

I don't get it.

My sanity is under assault by the criminals who control our government. I am quickly approaching my wit's end as I learn of the extreme waste, fraud, and general criminality of the government

And they wonder why people are going postal!

well, you can all just cool off because these programs are very necessary. Just because some people take advantage of it doesn't mean everyone who needs it is bad.

Enjoy it while you can becuase it's all coming to an end!

There are a lot of people right here in Salisbury taking advantage of the food stamps they get..I have a friend that goes to the crab place on old Ocean city road and sits at the raw bar and has oysters shucked for her and hubby and eats lobster and shrimp..Well us working folks have to save our money to pay our electric, mortage and household bill...While we are busting our asses working these folks are fine dining..Then there is the POS mother of 3 who supports her non-working druggie boyfriend, when she gets hers she sells them so he can get his drug fix...HMMM and the kids are always hungry when they go to school, dads or grandmas..Yea, if you are reading this you know who you are..System abusing lazy POS..The working people out here do what they have to ,to get by, yea I would eat beans , so i could pay my bills. Not theses losers ...Its steak, shrimp, and raw bar..Who do they think they are..Oh excuse me ,our government is allowing this..Come on folks we need to get the system changed..Hey make it a round of food stamps for the working man..My pantry could use stocking, and i think some lobster would be great, and the raw bar on the side........

ya see...if you had no pride or self esteem you could really capitalize on this. Work under the table, get food stamps, get the "wherefare", wic. you know, just like the illegals.

It's food people. Whether it's prepared or not, or fast food.
These kinds of minor abuses only annoy people scraping by themselves.
If you want to point the finger at some real crooks, look to Wall St, who's stolen countless BILLONS of you tax dollars to buy themselves mansions around the world, yachts, and golden toilets.
Stop picking on the poor, even if some might be lazy. Can't blame them for not having the self esteem to get out of the deep whole they are in.

I have seen Registered Nurses using Independence cards at walmart. They make $65,000+.
My wife wont let let say anything to her because she's scared of us being called Racist. I make $30,000 and still pay over $7000 in taxes'. I want to puke sometimes.

OK..I have no problem with people getting>>FOOD> with their food stamps..But just think how much more they could get from the grocery store , if they shopped for real food..Not eating shrimp , lobster, or the raw bar ,or a bushel of crabs..Hey baby a pot roast, or hamburger helper goes a long way..Most childre dont eat raw expensive fish, and orysters..This program is to feed our hungry and people who are hungry.. Not to sit at a raw bar ,drink beer and have oysters shucked for your lazy ass..Try fixing a box of Mac and cheese, that will fill those little hungry bellies up..Stop sending them to Dads or school hungry..While you and your lazy boyfriend dine on fantastic seafood..Or selling them on the corner for 1/2 price..These are suppose to feed your children..You know who you are and this is about to come to an end....As for the rest of you pos, out there driving better cars than i do. Enjoy pulling out wades of cash right now and your foodstamp card ..The ride will end for you too....Elect a new president soon ..Clean up social services..These people just dont get it......Tipping my hat to you folks that are eating breakfast today with food that you had to bust your butt for.....To those abusing the system ,I hope you choke on your probley prepared by others pancakes...Just sayin....

I wouldn't want to live on that card. Yes, a population abuses this but others are living meal to meal on these cards. For a lot of people this is to get through temporary hard times, it is a needed safety net.

I hate to be the one to point out the obvious but it has been my experience that alot of the people I see using these cards are obese-which is far from starving.

Don't y'all ever get tired of bitching about people? They didn't make these programs but they are taking advantage of them. I bet most if not all of you would too if you had a chance.

Complain to the lawmakers. Complain to the corperations who move to other countries.

Give me free food. I'll take it and won't look back.

Here's a point of view you will not get elsewhere.
A couple years ago, when my husband was laid off,we were eligible for food stamps and received benefits for 6 months, until our income was back to normal.I was dumbfounded by the amount we were given-almost $600 a month for 3 people! I was confused because you always hear people on assistance griping they want MORE,they do not get enough.BULLCRAP! We always ended the month with plenty left over because we have worked all our lives and always budgeted so even in best of times we only spent $100 a week on food anyways.
We only got them for 6 months and when we closed out our benefits we still had money on the card.I asked our worker about it and they said "spend it" because they couldnt "take it back".
I am glad it was there for us and hope I never have to use it again but you people who have never used it need to know that nobody who gets them is starving to death tonight.Anyone complaining they dont get enough is probably selling them for cash....or using them illegally(some stores do that to sell booze and other non-food) or they are too lazy to budget and shop wisely.
I probably could have dragged it out longer but I am ethical, honest and it was humiliating for me.It is meant as a safety net but too many use it as a way of living.
