Westboro Baptist Church To Defend Military Funeral Protests Before High Court

For parishioners of the Westboro Baptist Church, Wednesday's case at the Supreme Court is more than an hour of legal debate over the constitutionality of military funeral protests; it will also mark the end of their "I-70 GodSmack Tour" of protests across the country.

The group's last picket before they arrive at the court is scheduled to happen earlier in the morning at Arlington National Cemetery.

For many, the idea of protesting at any funeral -- let alone one for a member of the military -- is abhorrent, yet members of the Westboro Church proudly boast of having held more than 44,000 pickets at funerals and other events. They also strongly defend their First Amendment right to protest.

"This case is about a little church in Topeka, Kansas, engaging in public speech on a public right-of-way, about issues of vital public interest and importance," lawyer Margie Phelps wrote to the court defending the protests. She is also the daughter of church founder Fred Phelps and will argue the case before the justices.

I realize it's empowering them or whatever, but I realy am astonished no one has killed this phelps guy or his daughter. From my understanding is it's mostly his large family (most likely breeding with one another), not like they make a ton of converts. If it were my family, I would gladly go to jail to maim one of those lunatics. Then everyone can throw a celebration at the funeral.

These people make me sick to my stomach. Who the heck do they think is protecting their right to hold up those mindless hate signs anyway?

I'm with (all the way) 10:57....and isn't it ironic that hundreds of thousands of soldiers have died to protect their right to insult soldiers and their families in their most heartwrenching moments? I'm thinking "justifiable homicide' and no jury would convict, except, perhaps, a jury of liberal democrats who hate America anyway and have never served or sacrificed a single thing for their country (I had to throw THAT in just to stir up the comments....lol)

I hope Westboro Baptist Church didn't pay their fire subscription fee. Now, that would be a great story.

What I find the most ridiculous is they say the American soldiers that get killed in combat are because of the sins of the gay Americans. Wow these people are nuts.

The best thing to do when these guys come to town is set up a table across the street from them and collect donations for the groups that they are protesting, and donate them in the name of WBC. People have been doing this in alot of different cities. Raising more than $10,000 sometimes.

You cant deny the truth in his message- not everyone has the guts to tell it like it is. 911, Katrina and dead solders are the result of mans homosexual sin.
