Family Dog Shot, Killed While Eviction Notice Served

A Forest Heights, Md., woman's dog was killed while Prince George's County sheriff's deputies served an eviction notice.

The woman was behind on her rent, authorities said. Deputies knocked on her door Friday, announced their presence and entered.

One of the deputies said he was cornered by a Rottweiler and shot at it when it lunged at him.

The dog's owner was so upset she had to be hospitalized. Her sister said the dog was just protecting his family.

Notice, they "knocked on the door, announced their presence, and entered". No indication that their knock was acknowledged by the occupant. Sounds like someone didn't do their homework. This is where the government has allowed the enforcement of law to over run common sense. Used to be enforcement was all about common sense, now it's the SWAT team for everything, just to justify a budget....and intimidate the general public.

Just keep saying to yourselves, "Our masters know best".

Sounds to me like they shouldn't have just walked into someones house like that before allowing the owner of the dog a chance to put the dog in another room. I think the deputy should have waited for the owner to answer the door instead of just going in like he did. My dog would have done the same if a stranger walked in my house.

12:01, you forfeit your rights as a tenant when you don't pay your rent. If the eviction was not necessary this would have never happened

4:25 PM, Yeah I'm sure the tenant was intentionally not paying their rent and trying to get one over on the landlord. Wake the hell up, they were probably un-employed. I hope you don't experience anything like losing your job, nor would I wish that on anyone else for that matter. But we are still losing jobs at a rate of 130K/month. Where would you suggest they go? Maybe you should open your door to the tenant and take them in. I've had to take someone in that lost their job.

The only reason that dog is gone is because the owner failed to control it. I would have shot it too. The deputies had a right to be there as they were just doing their job. Or maybe they should have let it attack them and then sued the crap out of a family who has nothing to begin with. Thank God it wasn't a Girl Scout with a box of cookies at the door or does the dog have a right to "defend" its home even then? Think about it. The owner of that dog should be hospitalized because she was an idiot. I love my dogs but this lady gets no sympathy from me. Sounds to me like she is looking for an excuse to sue the department because she needs some cash. Just another burden on taxpayers for a total lack of common sense.

Even if the tenant had lost her job, it is not the landlord's fault. Should the landlord forfeit his or her income because the tenant has lost hers? That also has nothing to do with the fact that her dog tried to attack the officer. Besides, if you can't afford to pay the rent, why do you have a pet?

This is unfortunate, however we all face unexpected things in our lives. First, if you looked at the news, it stated she was at work; therefore, she had a job. Second, you are given notice that you must vacate the primisses, so she should have packed up her belongings and vacated the house. Although two wrongs don't make a right, this could have been avoided by leaving in a timely manner to avoid having your items placed on the streets.
