How Long Is Too Long To Linger After Finishing Your Meal?

If you've dined out enough in your life, you've likely been on both sides of the waiting game...

You're the one standing at the front of the restaurant, scanning the room for diners who seem to be wrapping things up. Or you're the ones sitting at the table, finishing up dessert or sipping your third cup of coffee, even though people are waiting for a table.

I took my son out to lunch a couple days ago. We were the third table to be occupied. After eating and filling our go containers, and before finishing our drinks, we went to the rest room. Returning to the table, it had been cleared completely, and we were told our check was ready at the counter! I couldn't even finish my drink! There was only ONE other occupied table in the restaurant.

I now thank my "Lucky Star" that I won't be eating at that Fruitland restaurant again!

As long as you want. If you wanted fast food, you know where to go. When you go out for a nice meal, and you want to linger....you should. Drink your wine, talk...have your third cup of coffee, you're paying for it.

I don't like to linger. When the meal is done I'm ready to get out of there.

I disagree. If you want to lounge go to a lounge. Be respectful to the people that are waiting to have their dinner. The staff rely on their tip money to survive.

Well I can tell you that when I meet friends out for dinner, we have lingered for up to four hours at times. We have alot to catch up on and I constantly ask the waiter/waitress if we are bothering them by staying and never get negative feedback. It usually runs into time when other tables are clearing anyway. Red Lobster and Olive Garden are very good about not chasing you away and I tip well.

It really depends on the place. At Denny's as long as you want. At the 21 Club in Manhattan maybe 10 minutes after everything is eaten and you have paid your check. It's not a matter of a "rule", but really one of consideration to both the people with later reservations and the wait staff.

The longer you stay after the meal, the bigger gthe tip you have to leave... turning over tables is how wait staff make money... so if you want to linger drop a larger tip.

5:27 It's not only how the staff makes money, table turnover is how the business stays in business.

How about the older crowd that gets together at a restaruant in the mornings, order coffee and sit and tell back in the day stories for 2 hours. Their bill each is about $2 and leave a 50 cent tip.
