Pelosi Sees "Boom" In Wake Of Haiti Quake

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that the earthquake in Haiti and the resulting aid may lead to a "real boom economy" there.
Lawmakers say they plan to encourage more charitable donations by making them tax-deductible.

"I think that this can be an opportunity for a real boom economy in Haiti," she told reporters in the Capitol, drawing from her experience in San Francisco. Haiti "can leap-frog over its past challenges, economically, politically, and demographically in terms of the rich and poor and the rest there, and have a new -- just a new, fresh start," the California Democrat added.
House leaders said they plan to introduce legislation -- possibly as soon as next week -- that would allow people to deduct charitable contributions directed to Haiti from their 2009 tax filings. --Washington Times

Joe if there is a revenue problem in Maryland and this country then why in the world is our Governor proud to announce the spending of hard earned tax dollars to acquire unneeded wildland to preserve? The Tax and Spend Democrats need to go!!

State acquires wildland for preservation

ANNAPOLIS -- Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Board of Public Works approval of the acquisition of 290 acres of forested wetlands, wooded uplands and shoreline on a tributary to Nassawango Creek. The land-preservation agreement protects 53 acres of forested wetlands and 237 acres of upland forest located along the Pocomoke River in Worcester County.

This property serves as important stopover and nesting habitat for migrating waterbirds and shorebirds. The total cost to protect all eight properties is $4.6 million, including $1.4 million of federal grants and $750,000 in private funds from The Nature Conservancy.

Pelosi once again exposes her lack of a firm grip on reality when she compares California's earthquake recovery with that facing Haiti.

No long term improvement in Haiti's standards of living or its economic outlook will occur without a radical change in its government and economic and social policies.
Is Pelosi suggesting that the United States be that agent of change? Or that this forever impoverished and decimated land mass can be made to flourish with a huge injection of donated relief cash?
Put Nancy in some coveralls and boots and send her down there. She's obviously never seen real poverty up close.

She and her cronies have done such a good job with our economy. Maybe some real tax "free"dom for our own citizens would help our own economy also.

She doesn't understand their culture. We have been trying to help and teach them for over 200 years. It hasn't worked , the money will disappear into the corrupt government. Their are no moral standards or understanding between right and wrong. The witch doctors will lead the way to distruction again.

Disasters like this expose the weaknesses in the political system and may insight Haitians to conduct radical changes as they recover. I think it was a great comment from Pelosi, despite some of her past statments. Hopefully there will be political changes as well as long term business investments to follow.

she wasn't making a direct comparison, only comparing the potential rebound. I dont think there is an economist in the world that would disagree with her assertion that Haiti, as a whole, could come back better than before.
Sorry, Pelosi is right (again)

Now that we are allowing illegal Haitian immigrants to stay, and more than likely transporting thousands more into this country it will be a BOOM for new Democrat voters--

How in the hell do people this stupid get to the top of the government ladder? I guess it's a real good indication of the ignorance and stupidity of a lot of American society.
