Middle Eastern Music
Arabic music virtuoso Simon Shaheen brings the sounds of the Middle East to life at SU 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Shaheen is a master of the violin and the ’oud, a traditional stringed instrument of Middle Eastern music. He teaches at schools and universities including Juilliard, Columbia, Princeton and Harvard. His concert schedule has included Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Shaheen and his band, Qantara, won 11 Grammy nominations for their 2001 album Blue Flame. Sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs as part of this semester’s “The Arts and Culture of the Arab World” fall cultural events series, admission is free and the public is invited. This is the stupidest thing you have ever said, and to think I had respect for you.
No one is forced to go to this concert. Not all Arabs are terrorists. Most are beset and besieged in their own countries by extremists.
What is wrong with promoting understanding of other cultures throughout the world? Much of their culture is beautiful.
Think about that the next time you tap your cigar ash on a fine Persian rug.
I think cultural diversity is awesome- it is not being forced- just offered...we can all learn to be more tolerant and accepting.
8:38 and 8:38, the same, it is being forced on the students because their tuition is paying for it. Everything that happens in that university comes out of tax dollars and tuition. This is America so offer American Culture.
How about the Syrian Ambassador coming to SU?
SU invites way more left/liberal speakers than middle of the road and conservative speakers...

what about the school football team. not everyone likes football but it is being paid by the school. why are they forcing THAT down our throats.

The purpose of college is to expose students to all sorts of new ideas, life around the world, etc.
American culture is taught as well. To ONLY teach American culture sounds a little nationalistic. If you don't know what that means, think Hitler.
"American" culture, by the way? Okay, so let's get rid of any more performances of Lord of the Dance, all ballet, Dancing with the Stars because it has moves from Spain in it, no more Italian food, and many life-saving medical devices because Israelis came up with them.
The American Indian would probably like all of you to go back where you came from so they can get back to American Culture.

You're right, a lot of us Natives would sometimes. But you guys are just so darn hilarious that we need a good laugh now and then.
I go to SU, and they have all sorts of various cultural activites every semester from all over the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. They do theme dinners for all religious holidays be they Christian, Jewish or Muslim. They have Hannuakah, Christmas, and even Kwanzaa dinners every year. It is all VERY diverse and a great learning experience. I look forward to the Middle Eastern food nights every year because the food is fabulous. The Syrian Ambassador speaker was informative and interesting as well.
None of it is shoved down our throats. Yes our tutition helps to pay for it, but it pays for all the cultural activities from all over the world, not just the Middle Eastern ones.
The community should attend some. They might learn a thing or two about the world.
FORCED?? They PAY to go to school there and if they don't......who cares. They are not forced to go to class OR events. SU has their money and could care less what they do.

Because it is American you dumb@ass! We should focus on American Culture and not middle eastern cultures. Diversity is nice at times, but quit opening our country up to everything foreign.
