Salisbury An Also Ran In All-American City Finals
On Friday evening these nine towns or cities and one county were awarded the "All-American City" honor for 2009 by the National Civic League, following presentations by the finalists that were named earlier this year:
Phoenix, Arizona; Inglewood, California; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Somerville, Massachusetts; Albany, New York; Kinston, North Carolina; Statesville, North Carolina; Caroline County, Virginia; Richmond, Indiana and Witchita, Kansas.
Competing cities were judged on the merits of 1) three local projects that reflected outstanding collaboration, 2) a 10-minute, on-site presentation that showcased the projects and 3) a 10-minute, on-site question-and-answer segment. According to the National Civic League, each applicant and subsequent finalist completed a detailed award application documenting three community projects that address local challenges such as job creation/economic development, environmental sustainability, neighborhood revitalization and disaster recovery.
The All America City designation by the National Civic League was created 60 years ago. Each year for the past several years, two dozen or so communities from across the country have been selected as finalists based on the hundreds of award applications received each year by the NCL.
Salisbury and two other Maryland towns, Pocomoke City and Rockville, were among the finalists.

so, how much did this fiasco cost, in total?
The entry fee, the accommodations for the reps, etc.?
would have loved to be a fly on the ceiling for the "presentations".
What pray, did they misrepresent?
Seems to me any town coughing up the money can make it.
If Salisbury made it to a "finalist" position; I'd question the entire thing. I'm afraid to go to the ATM or grocery store in Salisbury anymore. Our river literally stinks and has garbage, condoms and turds floating in it. Government corruption is rampant. Gangs are everywhere and we are referred to as "Crackbury" by those in the drug culture in the neighboring big cities.
Being judged on projects that create jobs and stimulate the local economy??? ROFLMAO How do we even stand a chance? There arent any jobs here, we've lost more than we've "created". Crime isnt a factor in the judging which is obvious since this crime infested place has won in the past. How can a city with no REAL jobs, dangerous crime levels and being known to many local ppl(high schoolers and adults) as a "dead end" even be a finalist. Something else to brag about so the apologists can talk this place up. Ppl here rely on ignorance to keep them going. Try living anywhere else and you'll see how backwards this place is.
Instead of trying to win bogus awards like this, how bought we cut through the BS and solve some local problems.
Bummer. Now I have to move away. This was the only thing I was hanging on for. This was our only chance....lol.
What a joke, and waste of time and money. Anyone who lives here or near here or who has heard of Salisbury knows this has turned into anything BUT an All American city...maybe there's a contest for the Most Dangerous Place to visit an ATM, we could probably win that one.
Our only hope is for our smart new mayor to get his bearings (by doing due diligence and researching the issues with his own eyes and ears) and then make changes accordingly. And he will.
Not by being vindictive or mean-spirited, but by knowing the facts and actually approaching these situations in a business-like manner.
Then maybe we can go out at night without fear again.
Pocomoke made it and Salisbury didn't???? How funny is that?
Maybe the corruption level was a category? We're not really corrupt, just living with the after effects of an inept and underqualified mayor and her cronies.
How much did they spend on this Barrie Tilghman boondoogle?
This is the biggest crock of dung ever imagined. Pocomoke?????? My gosh, that town is a nest of vipers led by the most corrupt "politician" on the Eastern Shore with cronyism and illegal activities running amock. And Salisbury? that is the biggest farce of all. A nasty, dirty, crime-ridden town with crumbling infrastructure, a decaying downtown, and an inferiority complex and THAT is supposed to qualify you as an All-American city? HAAAAAA.
There is no way that this organization is credible or knows what they are doing.
Obviously the homeless vote was the factor that influenced our finalist standing.
That's all I see driving around town.
It's like the 'March Of The Living Dead'.
Thanks Barrie for making our home so hospitable to the derelicts of society.
I am so grateful to know our town is a magnet for the underprivileged and can sleep well at night knowing we're doing all we can.
Ok, can we now erase this last vestige of the Tighlman administration? Let's not enter this bs "contest" ever again.
Pocomoke won in a previous year. It was a finalist like Salisbury and an also-ran like Salisbury this year.
