Armed Robbery At Salisbury University

On November 22, 2008 at approximately 4:45 PM a Salisbury University student was robbed at the Salisbury University Athletic Fields. The suspect displayed a small black handgun. After the suspect took the victim’s property, he fled on foot, - southbound on Wayne Street.

The suspect was described as an African-American male, approximately 25 to 35 years old. He was approximately 5’8" tall, 150 to 170lbs, with a long thin face. He was wearing dark colored jeans, a black long sleeve shirt, and no coat.

Anyone who may have information about this crime is asked to contact the Salisbury University Police Department: (410) 543-6222; or, report anonymously to Crime Solvers of the Lower Eastern Shore: (410) 548-1776.

I would like to remind our campus community that crimes can occur anywhere at anytime. Individuals should always be attentive to their surroundings, and remain alert to the potential ill-intent of others nearby. Please review and consider the following tips. Extra vigilance and caution is in order whenever you are out alone, away from crowds.

Street Robbery Tips:
1. Try to remain calm. Do not resist. Consider the robber dangerous.
2. In most cases, the robber only wants your valuables/money and is not there to hurt you.
3. Assume the robber is armed, even if you don't see a weapon.
4. If a weapon is displayed, consider it to be real and loaded.
5. Do only what the robber tells you. If you don't understand, tell the robber.
6. Attempt to get a good, complete description of the robber, - taking note of unique and unusual characteristics.
7. Your main goal is to survive!
8. Don't resist and fight with the assailant unless it is evident that your life is in danger! The most effective self defense measures include running away, hiding and screaming to draw the attention of others.
9. Remember--your valuables can be replaced, - your life can't.

Report any suspicious persons immediately to the police. If possible, use a cellular phone to call 911 while maintaining visual observation of the subject(s).

Heading south on Wayne Street the first building past the Salisbury University athletic fields is the Salisbury University Police Department. Great jobs guys.

African American? Interesting! I am getting afraid to even walk out of my office after work half afraid
they are lurking behind the bushes . They are brave enough to just walk up to with a gun and demand your money! They need to get a JOB just like most people.

During the weekend the officers are usually doing what police officers ought to be doing: patrolling the campus. There would be something wrong if they were sitting in the station drinking coffee and eating snacks.

I went to Walmart last night, I usually go early in the day, I was not comfortable in the dark parking lot even though they have lights. No wonder crime is down, if it is so it's because people lock themselves inside their own homes after dark like being in our own prison.

the police have a slow response time unless someone is shot being shot at or dead or if another officer is in this situation. my advice is to pay attention to detail be aware of your surroundings at all times especially during this season use keyless entry my vehicle has a nice feature if i use they keyless entry but do not open the door it automatically locks itself. park in well lit areas and do not shop alone also i carry no cash its a lot harder for a thief to steal monoey from a bank card and if they do its a lot easier to get back.if youre in a situation where your life is threatened do what you have to do to survive throat jab eye gouge kick the groin but never turn your back to the person. when you need to fight to survive anything is fair

For those bashing the Salisbury University Police Officers it is not their fault crime happens on and around campus. That fat liberal pig they call their prez won't let them be police officers. She is allowing them to be only glorified security guards that happen to carry a single shot side arm.

Anonymous said...

THAT is exactly what they are, "Security Guards." And with every crime that happens Chief Lasley has the same advise. Advise is cheap. Dumbass

Yeah the Prez is too busy trying to keep the Mexicans away from her ugly ass daughter

5:46, Why don't you take your stupid ass on SU campus and put your hands on a "Security Guard" and see what happens? I'll lay odds that the Security Guard kicks your ass and takes you to WCDC.

6:15 Exactly! I'm not a cop hater, I'm a Security Guard hater. BOZO.

Warning! When you get out of your car, do not use the remote to lock the doors. Use the manual lock when you exit. "Code grabbers" can be used to enter your car if you use the remote. This was checked out on snopes. com and was told to our group by a police officer at our Neighborhood Watch meeting.

BOZO 7:20pm,

Why don't you do as Anon 7:17pm suggests on take a walk on campus and challenge one of your security guard friends. I bet you are to much of a punk to do that because you won't even sign your name. Are you afraid the security guards will bitch slap you in front of your friends? Oh, I'm sorry that can't happen because you don't have any friends.

We need to organize a movement on the shore and try to get carry laws put up to vote. If we could put the right to carry a gun back in law abiding citizens hands again, that would be a start in the right direction.

Crime is on the rise all over the country, and its on the shore too. We the people need a way to stand up for ourselves. Gun regulation/laws hurt law abiding citizens, criminals don't follow the laws (which is why they are criminals).

Guns are a reality in this country. There are millions of them. It would be easier to round up and deport all the illegals and win the war on drugs then it would be to get rid of guns/ammunition in this country.

Pepper spay while not as effective as a gun is not illegal to carry (not the keychain ones but the 2/4/6 oz canisters). It's atleast something.

The SU police are just a bunch of fat lazy men who wouldn't know how to do their job if something happen under ther nose. All they can do is write parking tickets and collect a paycheck. They take after the SU president.

I do agree that Ed Lashleys crime tips are getting old. The GHO needs to let the Salisbury University Police Officers be cops. There are criminals in and around the campus and they need to do their job. If Ed can't do the job get someone else that can. The Dud isn't the law of the land so she needs to move her fat a$$ out of the way and let the police department fight crime.

Anonymous said...

The SU police should take it upon themselves to do the job they were hired to do. If the Dud has a problem with it, let her take it up with those that fund the college. If Ed Lashley did police work on the campus like Mike Lewis does in the county, people would think twice before committing a crime or they'd suffer the consequences. Lashley would have the support of the entire community as well as the parents of all of those students. If the parents of SU students pulled their funding and their child the Dud would have to back off or be relieved of her position.

To Ed Lashley, I knew you in high school and I know you are capable of delivering the same type of enforcement we receive in the county. ZERO TOLERANCE!

It is so easy to sit back in your chair and tell others how to do it. Why don't you go into your boss's office and tell him or her what you are going to do knowing they have asked you not to. Oh, wait do you need your job, do you need to bring home money to your family, have you been there somany years that you could not get a job elsewhere, are you so far into your retirement. Several problems here, 1: The SU does not want criminals arrested and "bad" publicity, me on the other hand, arrest them, that should be life, commit a crime get punished. 2: If the state followed other states and made law enforcement retirements the same, you could take a risk and stand up knowing that you could go somewhere else without lossing everything. Did you know that SU has the highest STD rate, no SU doesn't want you to know the truth.

"nate", you have no idea what you are talking about. Young, rich white kids don't walk to school, they drive their Beamers. The majority of students and Salisbury University are middle class and desire an education so they can post on blogs without grammatical errors such as your self.

You should consider going back to school yourself and learn proper grammar.

Don't hate them because they have ambition.

There is a lot of truth to Anon 9:48 AM's comment. The GHO Dud is just like Salisbury's mare and the only thing they know is intimadation and retalliation. Get rid of both of them.

I NEVER agree with Nate but he is starting to make sense-look at all the people arrested for simple posession in Wicomico County.....who really gives a rats ass about stoners when we have violent gun-toting criminals out there in the city AND county???

Well, those Univ. Police officers, security guards do earn a good pay check, have State retirement and tuition waiver (that's FREE tuition to the readers with a GED) and pretty good working conditions. So, call them what you want, but they and their families are living well. I live in the same development as one of them!

Nate is right.... the criminals will prey where there are easy pickins.... although SU is generally safe, crime will happen anywhere there is opportunity. students let their guard down because they feel safe and in their own world... why else would they be out at 3am walking in a deserted area?

The only person to blame for these crimes are the criminals themselves, no one else.

Even if a police officer is driving around the area, these criminals would still take the opportunity to commit the robbery after the police drive past... they do not think as normal law abiding citizens think -- they prey on opportunity....

The only way to help reduce these crimes is to educate students and have the students follow safety principals. As long as criminals are out there, these crimes will occur....
