This is a subject close to my heart. Do you know that we have adult students at the school where I teach who are not US citizens and who get the PELL grant, which is a federal grant (no pay back required) plus other federal grants to go to school?
One student from the Dominican Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money left over.
She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program (check it out - I did) for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts of needs while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US Citizen because she plans to return to the Dominican Republic someday and that she
'loves HER country.'
I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the US is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen and she told me that it doesn't bother her, because that is what the money is there for!
I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a US Citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education.
Something is wrong here. I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough.
Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY

Another good example of too much goverment. The more goverment you have......the more programs you'll have....the more abuse you will have. The tax monster has been fat and outa control for many many years. I wish I new the answer.
It will only get worse if Obama is elected, and I am a lifelong Democrat. Sorry but some of these excessive giveaways to people too lazy to work have got to stop.

To the teacher that doesn't know what she is talking about....that caribe program is to teach the immigrants who come into this country to speak english, without it how are they suppose to learn? second, i have busted my rear over the years to raise my three kids and get my education, i have also worked 2 jobs at times while i was getting my education and i thank the gvt for having programs out there to help those of us AMERICANS that need it. If you don't like how the country is run, then GET OUT and go to another country.
Im sad so say it also that its Americans like the past poster and a few others, who feel like they have a God given right to sell America out if they want to. In the letter the teacher is speaking about "LEGAL" immigrants. Now if the 1 (one) or whatever number legal immigrants becomes a citizens or not isn’t the real problem with immigration in our country. Nearly everyone in this country is here because of some immigrant ancestor. Additionally if people believe that "Illegal" immigration is a resent phenomena, "WRONG" answer. Amongst every immigrant group there were illegal’s. I personally know of an Italian family and several Irish who's immigrated ancestors came here illegally. But this letter (Teacher Talks) is talking about legal immigrants. Just recently in the news a college student who graduated with honors, due to his graduation it was found his entire family were illegal’s from eastern Europe. Because of his scholastic success, many people felt sympathy for he and his family, and a congressman has intervened to assist in providing them legal status. For me personally this is ok. I have no gripes towards this, but let us not confuse the issues of legal versus illegal immigration. People also need to be careful of their prejudices and racism. I'm a black American who's a mixture of Black, Native American, Irish, and English. My family can trace its history (Black and European) in this country back nearly 300 years. I'm also U.S. Navy retired. I'm proud as an American and that I live in this country, but I’m not all the time proud of my country. People are what make up a country and are the ones who can make it great or can ruin it. Many blog statements remind me of why I sometimes don’t feel very proud. I definitely hear undertones of racism, and categorizing immigrants as blight. As to large government, this government spends billions of dollars annually towards programs to assist other countries. To pretend that this war and particularly its cost is necessary for our “Country” is hog wash. It doesn’t do anything for our sorry state of employment, the economy, the state of our ever growing crime, better and higher education for “Americans” or the out of control growing cost of fuels. I live in the deep south and have a sister up north. I’m really fearful about her fuel bill this coming winter. Should we have larger Government, “*@ Yes” if it’s to help us legal Americans, and Legal Immigrants.
