One Fire Fighter NOT Afraid To Use HIs Real Name

As a firefighter you have few times to save a life in a fire. The opportunities are few and far between for several reasons. Smoke detectors have been one of the key elements of this fact. Sprinklers and public education also play a role here. However there are those opportunities where none of these advantages are in place to prevent a tragedy and the firefighters come into play. I joined the fire department 28 years ago and have made a save or two in a fire. I have also pulled victims out that did not survive because the fire had too much headway to overcome. I think the average firefighter is just there to help a person in his time of need. It doesn't matter if its a broken pipe or a fully involved house. The one constant is that they are always there, whether career or volunteer, you can count on them being there. I respect the opinions of the readers post and he is entitled to his opinion. He left the service for the resons stated and that was his choice and the reasons are not new. However in my career the rewards have far exceeded the negatives. I will do this as long as my body will allow me to. We are a different breed and I'm proud to be a part of the fire service.

Thats how most of us feel... Chief, is old school and way it should be....

A firefighter may never save someone from burning building, but its good to know that they would. They have the training and would try to save anyone if called upon to do so. Your average citizen would not be willing to take the risk to do so.

I see that firefighters save two animals last night in a house fire in Delmar. Its not always people they rescue. Our pets are like family to most.

I beg to differ, respectfully. If "I" were driving down the road and saw a home on fire and people hanging out the window, I'd do everything in my powers to help them. That's what god people and humans are all about.

I'd also like to say respectfully, are you saying you're above average because you do what you do? I say that because I have read numerous comments here where I absolutely would not believe many of you are above average.

Yes, you have training and certainly could do a better job and probably much safer than most. However, again, if I saw an accident and I could help, I will.

It use to be hard to become part of the fire department. You had to work hard proove yourself and hope that the old guys would teach you all the secrets.

We serve because it is a part of us, all honorable people wnat to serve, cristians have mission work. It is what makes us feel like part of humanity.

Working in the fire service has been my privledge, I no longer do this I am retired now and still miss it. Did I save people, yes did I loose people yes and more than I saved. Question is, saving one life worth losing the others. No, its not every patient I lost every fatality I lost in a house fire I remember the face, body situation. I remember who I was with and what happened. Like the Chief says we do it NOT for recognition but to serve.

When you join for personal gain, you join for the wrong reason. When you join to move up fast you miss the real reasons you are there. I had no rank when I retired and I was happy with it because I had personal contact with people more than I would if I was a chief of a department worried about making the mayor happy. You see that is all he has to worry about keeping his job, so he may lose track of the firefighters. ALL departments and I mean ALL departments are like this. Then there are those who try to skip the proper way of promotion and suck up and cheat, lie steal their way to the top. All businesses have these people.

So there are good with bad everywhere. I can say Salisbury like every department has had their suck ups and they are the trouuble makers most of the time.

PLEASE DO NOT lump all firefighters in this group, we do get affended by it becuase we have dedicated our life to do the right thing and like being a christian it hurts to get attacked but we continue to do our jobs.

Fact is everyone at some point wanted to be a firefighter, cop. I say the ones who did not wise choiice, pay sucks work is nasty and death is hard to deal with. You have to have a drive and passion for it.

BC god bless you. My father gave his life for the job. I went the other way, but I know he would be proud. He lived for the brotherhood and died for it. I just wish it was the same now as it was then. I know you both would get along well.

Joe, I have personally known Brian and his family for many years, before he was a fireman, and he is also the son of a fireman, now retired. This is one of the greatest human beings you could ever know. He shows no prejudices in his work or personal life. He is one person that they should all look up to and he is great friends with BC,

Ms. Buck, please!! We all that know you appreciate what you do for Station 1. Thank you for keeping the ladies room tidy and thank you for handling all the Christmas Parties. You do a very nice job with that.

On the fire scene I don't think that is your expertise. You are seen coming to the firehouse to mark up for your percentage. In most cases you bring your entire day care clientel with you. I do think I remember seeing you direct traffic one time. Good job on the work that you do.

I have known Bryan since childhood. He's always been straight as an arrow and a heck of a nice guy.

I don't see him being the kind of person with arms long enough to pat himself on the back, maybe just reflecting on a lifetime commitment that has been rewarding to him personally.

You don't see him hamming it up for the camera or putting himself in a situation that compromises his brotherhood.

I know he's been on board many years and I have never seen his face in print until blogs came along. I could be wrong however I don't think I've ever seen his picture in the paper.

Keep up the good work Bryan, thanks for everything.........Tim Chaney.

Oh Lord can someone please get me a Kleenex I think I am going to shed a tear for this crock of DRAMA!!

Yes it was hard to get into back then because it was just as clickish as it is today. What were the big secrets? Oh I know, where where the best places to hide the liquor bottles throughout the station and fire trucks. Where were the best places to bang the local HO or someone's sleazy girlfriend. Listen to the stories from the old folks and you will see that many of the firemen were major drunks. They could be found passed out at the firehouse. They were found drunk and vomiting anywhere and everywhere. Yes this is the truth!!

What is the big secret to fighting fire back then. No different than it is now. You put water on the fire. DUH!!!
