Although I respect Mr. Bill Ahtes as a very successful businessman and a man, I do not agree with his attempts to get this old Fire House for free. There are far too many positive opportunities for economic and development within this particular building.
My first feeling towards this building is no different from what the Mayor and Council stated very early on and backed up all the way up until they started construction of the new Station, it is very important to keep this Station in operation for the safety of those in the Downtown area where much of what has been built is considered today an extreme fire hazard. Then there's the Camden Neighborhoods surrounding that area as well as the Church Street area to boot. Should the Draw Bridge be up and there is a serious fire, shutting down this Fire Station is just a bad idea!
It was in the plans to keep it open and that's what they need to deliver. However, should they close it, this building has some serious financial value. The City of Salisbury desperately needs funds to catch up to what Barrie & Co. have spent over the years and it would be vital to use this as a financial resource.
Put the building up for sale/auction and bring in the highest bidder. There are plenty of empty buildings in that area. Let someone privately donate one of their building that believes in a theater and keep the taxpayers out of the expense, they can't afford it right now. Keep in mind, two weeks ago I stood on PAC 14 and offered to buy this building and the next thing I know, there's Bill Ahtes trying to push to get a deal through before this Council resigns and Mike Dunn assured him it would be taken care of before then.
It seems to me that if they can create retired horses as surplus items and sell them off, how the heck can they not consider this building as a positive source for money? If the "rich" want to expand their lifestyles and house a theater, they can do so by proving they have the kind of backing to support such a project and not do so at the taxpayers expense, respectfully.

LMAO!
What ever became of the old Boulavard Theater as a "Arts Building'?
Exactly. Great Point Ralph.
Hey, this would make a great spot for a Station 7 type restaurant, open in the evenings to attract people to the downtown area.
