Convicted Rapist Attacks Woman at Oregon Zoo
Thursday, July 27, 2006

PORTLAND, Ore. — A 32-year-old Portland woman suffered a slashed hand Wednesday when a knife-wielding man attacked her as she removed her two young children from a minivan at the Oregon Zoo, Portland police said.

Jere Ryder, 49, a registered predatory sex offender, had approached the woman from behind, ordering her and the children back into the car, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau.

The victim fended off Ryder, receiving the slash from the knife, and screamed, attracting the attention of nearby construction workers at the World Forestry Center. The workers chased and captured the man, holding him until police arrived, Schmautz said.

Ryder was charged with robbery and kidnap.

Ryder, who was convicted of rape and sodomy in 1974, is prone to targeting women who are strangers, entering residences at night and threatening victims at knifepoint, according to his online predator profile.

"We've been actively trying to find this guy because he had two warrants out for failing to register as a sex offender," Schmautz said.

Ryder's last known address was in Beaverton.

I have 2 questions on this one.
1. What the hell was he doing out of jail.
2. Why the hell didn't the construction workers finish what our justice system would not.

anonymous poster,
I understand the scenerio. My answer, more prisons & less good behavior releases, stricter border control to help curtail the drug trafficing and a little old fashion rope over the tree branch justice.
I know that's a real right wing answer, but if the shoe fits.
You all need to leave Mrs. Albero alone to enjoy her new rollerskate.
But you know Joe if you'd donated that much money to the Zoo for a new inmate habitat they wouldn't be able to keep you out!!!!!

...they'll make Ford and a Chevvy...that still last ten years like they should...Hell, I never could sing! Truthfully that is a beautiful piece of metal. I'd love to own one (and could afford it) but I'd need a shoehorn to get in, and the Jaws of Life to get out.
