Household Hazardous Waste & E-Cycling Collection Day on April 18

The Recycling Division of Worcester County Public Works, in conjunction with Maryland Environmental Services and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), will conduct Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling (electronics recycling) Collection Day on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Ocean City Park & Ride Lot in West Ocean City.

Gather up those old or unusable cans of pesticides, pool chemicals, gas and other fuels, oil-base paints, thinners and everyday hazardous wastes accumulating in and around the home and bring them to the recycling center for safe disposal. Electronic items, such as computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, radios, televisions and VCR’s, will be collected and later recycled.

Because household hazardous waste and electronics don’t degrade readily, recycling them saves much-needed landfill space. Furthermore, many of the items contain poisonous materials that could seep out of the landfill and contaminate surrounding soil and groundwater. Proper disposal of these items is among the many simple tasks we can practice to help protect the environment and ultimately our own health.

This event is open to Worcester County residents only. A representative from MDE will be on-site checking vehicle registration. Clean Ventures of Baltimore will be responsible for the safe disposal of all hazardous waste collected. The electronics will be shipped to an electronics recycler for dismantling. Hello all!

I am a teacher at Pocomoke Elementary School and recently received a grant for FoodPlay Productions, in conjunction with the Maryland Soybean Board, to present an entertaining and educational program at Pocomoke Elementary School! The program introduces students to healthy eating choices (nutrition education) in a fun way, in hopes to lower childhood obesity rates. They have asked me to send local media representatives a press release (see attachment) so that families and communities, in addition to students, can be exposed to nutrition education in hopes to trigger a community-wide interest in building healthy environments. Local Man Looking To The Community For Kidney Donor Match

Local Craig Lynch reluctantly opened up recently to seek help from the local community to find a kidney donor. Lynch has been battling polycystic kidney disease for several years, a disease that has unfortunately progressed much more quickly than doctors anticipated, leaving Lynch in dire need of a kidney transplant. After failing to find a match amongst relatives, Lynch’s family decided it was time to turn to the community for help. Lynch, who is a father to a 10-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter, is also an active member of the community, works at D3Corp in West Ocean City, and coaches little league baseball.

Lynch’s situation requires that both of his kidneys be removed and be replaced with a healthy kidney from a living donor. As soon as a match is found, doctors can operate and get Lynch back on track to healthy living.

So what exactly is a living donor and how can you become one? For starters, while donor matches are typically found amongst blood relatives, the reality is, anyone can be a match. We spoke with local Dan Taglienti about the donor process – Taglienti donated a kidney to his father, who was suffering from a rare blood disease that was adversely affecting his kidneys and his overall health.

Black Judges Gives Armed Robbers Light Sentence Saying Three-Year-Old White Victim is ‘Racist’

A black judge in Kentucky has given two home invaders and armed robbers a light sentence because he feels that their three-year-old white victim was a “racist” because in her victim statement the little girl said she is now afraid of black people after they broke into her home and threatened her with a gun.
 
In an outrageous statement from the bench, Louisville Judge Olu Stevens attacked the tiny white toddler and her parents for their “racism” calling the little girl’s statement “disturbing” while at the same time excusing the actions of the criminals who traumatized her. That’s right,this judge was more upset at a little girl for being scared by armed robbers than he was at the armed robbers.

At the sentencing trial of one of the robbers, a victim’s impact statement written by the little girl’s mother was entered into evidence. The statement read in part, “Whenever we are running errands, if we come across a black male, she holds me tight and begs me to leave. It has affected her friendships at school and our relationships with African-American friends.”

Insider’s Look At Roller Derby: Salisbury Roller Girls

When asked what her favorite aspect is of competing with the Salisbury Roller Girls, Street Team Director Caitlin Marvel didn’t have to think twice before launching into her sincere passion for the game. “…the love of the derby. There’s music, wheels clattering against wood, toe stops squealing, people falling, jumping and running on wheels – it is a ceaseless flood of brilliantly organized chaos, and that really brings the fans in the game with us.”

Sound exciting? That’s because it is. Roller derbies have gained traction in the past few years, with new teams popping up across Maryland and Delaware and more and more girls signing up for the high-intensity fun. The Salisbury Rollergirls were founded in 2010 by Eva “Buster Skull” Paxton, a Salisbury native who was playing on a roller derby team in Wilmington, DE (the closest team on the Shore at the time). “She wanted to bring roller derby to the area and create an athletic circuit for area women who wished to continue to take up a challenging sport, regardless of skating skill or experience,” said Marvel.

Five years later, the Salisbury Roller Girls have grown exponentially, currently boasting two full teams (each team is comprised of 14 girls) with alternates and several new girls that are still in the training before being rostered. “We pride ourselves in our league cohesion,” said Marvel, “which is why our retention is so good. We have always done our best to maintain that ‘small league’ fun and sense of unity.”

Norfolk, Virginia| A 78-year old retired officer of the CIA, Normand Hodges, has made a series of astonishing confessions since he was admitted at the Sentara General Hospital on Monday.
