Oneida County Legislator Ken Fort petitions New York state for mandatory welfare drug testing
County Legislator Ken Fort, D-1, is asking state representatives to revamp the Social Services Law to provide for drug testing of public assistance recipients.
“One of the most consistent and heartily repeated complaints that I hear is with regard to the fact that public assistance recipients are not required to pass any form of drug testing,” Fort said. “The growing problem of heroin use only escalates these complaints. Many taxpayers work in businesses that require them to pass drug tests. I agree with my constituents who do not feel that their hard-earned money which constitutes tax dollars should be provided to hard-core drug abusers to support drug habits.”
In a letter to Board Chairman Gerald Fiorini and the members of the board, Fort reminded colleagues that Oneida County and all of New York state is experiencing increased levels of opiate and heroin use.
“This memorializing petition may assist in finding addicts and getting them the treatment they and their family need,” he said. “The 11 heroin-related bills passed by the Legislature just as the 2014 session ended include provisions requiring insurance companies to consistently cover treatment for addiction. As county leaders, we should take action to follow through on the education of treatment options; urging our state representatives to enact legislation that increases the opportunity to encourage such treatment is one avenue we can pursue.”
Fort said legal research determined the effort to implement testing cannot be accomplished at the local level.

Wedding Photo Found In 9/11 Rubble Reunited With Owner After 13 Years
According to "Good Morning America," college professor Elizabeth Stringer Keefe has spent the last 13 years seeking the rightful owner of a wedding photo found by a friend of hers in the 9/11 rubble.
Every year since the attacks, Stringer Keefe would engage in a campaign to find the photo’s owner. In recent years, she has spread the word via social networks.
Stringer Keefe kept the photo tucked inside her favorite Ernest Hemmingway book for safekeeping.
This year, a day after the 9/11 anniversary, Fred Mahe was made aware of the photo via a coworker who sent him a story about the photo quest.

Rand Paul Vows to Repeal Every Prior Executive Order if Elected President
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — In front of a boisterous pub crowd of young voters here, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) ripped into President Obama over executive overreach and even vowed to repeal “all previous executive orders” in one of his first acts as president, should he run.
Paul’s comments came to the New Hampshire chapter of Generation Opportunity, a national grassroots conservative group with a libertarian appeal with thousands of young liberty-minded activists nationwide engaged through it.
Paul focused much of his remarks on executive overreach by President Barack Obama, saving some of his most interesting points for a question-and-answer session at the end.
“There’s a rumor going around you might run for president in a couple years,” a young man shouted as Paul took questions from the audience for several minutes after a 15-plus-minute speech.
“Man, who started that?” Paul joked with the man, who was in his mid-20s.

Democrats in Desperation
In the battle for Senate control, analysts from left to right give the GOP an edge.
Two things are becoming clear about this November’s U.S. Senate races. First, more and more analysts now say Republicans are likely to win at least the 51 seats needed for control of the Senate. Second, the result is that Democrats will run even more desperately negative campaigns in an effort to hold onto power. But don’t expect too much media thumb-sucking about “attack ads” this fall, since the worst are almost certain to come from the left.
In the battle for Senate control, analysts from left to right give the GOP an edge. Mark Blumenthal, the pollster for the Huffington Post, this week gave Republicans a 55 percent chance of taking back the Senate, which the Democrats have held since 2007. Among the close races, he says Arkansas and Louisiana are likely to tilt Republican, while Colorado and Iowa are “truly 50–50 races.”
Other analysts ranging from Larry Sabato to Charlie Cook to FiveThirtyEight.com’s Nate Silver also give the GOP the edge. Silver, who predicted Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection on the nose, says the GOP has a 65 percent chance of capturing the Senate. In his analysis: “Republicans can win the Senate solely by winning Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia, states which voted for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama by an average of 19 percentage points in 2012.”

CBS Sports Rejects Ad Featuring Child Reciting Pledge Of Allegiance As ‘Too Political’
Do you think a four-year-old girl reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is terribly offensive?
Apparently, CBS Sports Network does.
The national cable sports network rejected a 30-second television advertisement from Windermere Real Estate that shows company owner Dave Retter's adorable granddaughter delivering the pledge with her hand over her heart.
CBS Sports said the ad was "too political" to air during the network's upcoming broadcast of the Wrangler Champions Challenge rodeo.

Dem lawmaker suggests ‘sexting’ to get out vote
Congressman tells woman: 'Use the tools that we have'
(Daily Caller) Rep. James Clyburn, the third-ranking House Democrat, recently told a C-SPAN caller that “sexting” is an important tool for organizing voters.
Clyburn seemed to confuse basic “texting” with “sexting” — which involves sending sexual messages or photos — during a Labor Day weekend appearance on C-SPAN to promote his new memoir.
Clyburn, 74, told an anguished caller that Americans concerned about the Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin shootings should employ Twitter, Facebook and “sexting” to organize.

Obama Losing Support Among Women, Youths, Latinos
Three essential groups that formed part of Barack Obama’s voting coalition are slipping away from him, according to a newWashington Post/ABC News poll: women, young voters, and Latinos.
50% of female respondents disapproved of Obama, while 44% approved, a huge shift from 2012, when 55% approved and 44% disapproved. When Obama was inaugurated the second time in 2013, 60% of women approved of him. Traditionally, single women tend to vote more for Democrats while married women vote more for Republicans.
The poll reflected women’s discomfort with Obama’s handling of foreign affairs.

Reporter: Peterson's Son Told Cops "Heartbreaking Story"
Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was booked and released from a Texas jail on a child abuse charge early Saturday, capping a tumultuous week for the NFL, which was already facing heavy criticism for its handling of a domestic violence case involving another star player.
Nick Wright, host of CBS sports radio station 610 in Houston and one of the first reporters to break the Peterson story, said that he's read an account of what Peterson's 4-year-old son told police and described his story as "a heartbreaking story" on "CBS This Morning: Saturday."
"He mentions his reluctance to want to talk to police because 'Daddy Peterson might hit me,'" said Wright. "He references being hit in the face."
Wright also said that, according to the mother's statement to police, the boy told her that "Daddy has a whooping room."

Doctor: Bureaucracy Consuming Time That Should Be Spent With Patients
Modern-day medicine has become a quagmire of bureaucracy that consumes time that doctors should be using caring for their patients, says Dr. Mark Sklar, an assistant professor of medicine at the Georgetown University Medical Center and at the George Washington University Medical Center.
If high-quality medical care is the goal, the bureaucracies need to be tamed," Sklar writes in an opinion piece for Thursday's edition of The Wall Street Journal.
"Our government and insurance companies understandably want to measure outcomes of healthcare dollars spent. However, if the healthcare system rewards data entry, that is what it will get — the quality of care seems an afterthought."

James Foley Mom: 'Country Let Jim Down'
The mother of slain American journalist James Foley is harshly criticizing the U.S. government for its handling of her son’s hostage situation.
“I really, really feel that our country let Jim down,” Diane Foley said during a Thursday night interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
oley made clear that she didn’t want to blame specific people and said that there were many government officials who genuinely wanted to help. But she reserved significant criticism for the U.S. government in general, which she felt failed to help her family or James while he was held by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant captors.

Vote YES On Scottish Independence – Scotland Finally Has A Chance To Get Free From The British
Scottish voters finally have the opportunity to fulfill William Wallace’s dream of a Scotland that is free and independent of England forever. All they have to do is vote yes next week. Without a doubt, a divorce from the British would be quite messy, and life would probably be more comfortable in the short-term if Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom. But hopefully the people of Scotland are looking beyond short-term concerns. Today, the United Kingdom is a horribly repressive Big Brother police state that is dominated by bureaucratic control freaks. You can hardly even sneeze without violating some kind of law, rule or regulation. And the London banking establishment is at the very heart of the debt-based global financial system which is enslaving so much of the planet. Scotland finally has a chance to get free from all of this. All it is going to take is a yes vote on Scottish independence.
It looks like it is going to be an incredibly close vote. Recent polls show that the result could go either way. Needless to say, this is causing the British establishment to freak out quite a bit.
For example, a couple of large banks have attempted to sway the vote during this past week by publicly declaring that they will have to move to England if the vote for Scottish independence is successful…
The Royal Bank of Scotland announcedThursday that it is making contingency plans to move its legal incorporation to England in the event of a “yes” vote. In addition, Lloyds Banking Group said it had made arrangements to establish “new legal entities” in England should voters in Scotland decide to sever ties with Britain.

Enterovirus D68 Makes Its Way To The Northeast, Officials Confirm
The mysterious respiratory virus that's been making children sick across the United States has made its way to the Northeast.
More than a dozen cases of enterovirus D68 have been confirmed in New York state, officials said Friday, and FoxCT.com said that two Connecticut hospitals have reported possible cases.
The virus, which is responsible for sending dozens of children to hospitals in the Midwest, especially affects children with asthma. There is no vaccine and, because it is a virus, there is no cure.

Why The U.S. Chills Its Eggs And Most Of The World Doesn't
Go in search of eggs in most foreign countries and you might encounter a strange scene: eggs on a shelf or out in the open air, nowhere near a refrigerator.
Shock and confusion may ensue. What are they doing there? And are they safe to eat?
We Americans, along with the Japanese, Australians and Scandinavians, tend to be squeamish about our chicken eggs, so we bathe them and then have to refrigerate them.
But we're oddballs. Most other countries don't mind letting unwashed eggs sit next to bread or onions.
The difference boils down to two key things: how to go after bacteria that could contaminate them, and how much energy we're willing to use in the name of safe eggs.

Pendulum Wave Demonstration (Very Cool Video)
This is a large-scale demonstration of the interaction between period and pendulum length, using 16 bowling balls hung from a wooden frame.
Here are answers to some common questions:
** What am I seeing? How does this work? **
The length of time it takes a ball to swing back and forth one time to return to its starting position is dependent on the length of the pendulum, not the mass of the ball. A longer pendulum will take longer to complete one cycle than a shorter pendulum. The lengths of the pendula in this demonstration are all different and were calculated so that in about 2:40, the balls all return to the same position at the same time - in that 2:40, the longest pendulum (in front) will oscillate (or go back and forth) 50 times, the next will oscillate 51 times, and on to the last of the 16 pendula which will oscillate 65 times. Try counting how many times the ball in front swings back and forth in the time it takes the balls to line up again, and then count how many times the ball in back swings back and forth in the same time (though it's much harder to keep your eye on the ball in back!)
