Breaking News: The E.P.A. chief plans to repeal President Obama's signature climate policy, setting up a fight over U.S. efforts to tackle global warming

At an event in eastern Kentucky, Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said that his predecessors had departed from regulatory norms in crafting the Clean Power Plan, which was finalized in 2015 and would have pushed states to move away from coal in favor of sources of electricity that produce fewer carbon emissions.
“The war on coal is over,” Mr. Pruitt said. “Tomorrow in Washington D.C., I will be signing a proposed rule to roll back the Clean Power Plan. No better place to make that announcement than Hazard, Kentucky.”

A coal miner pension bailout could set the stage for a multi-trillion-dollar taxpayer bailout. Don't do it

A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers from coal country have introduced an updated bill to use federal taxpayer dollars to pay for the broken promises of one particular coal mining union—the United Mine Workers of America, or UMWA.

If passed, this bill could be the tip of a multi-trillion dollar taxpayer bailout. President Trump, whose sympathy for the miners is well known, should beware, along with Congress.

That’s because the UMWA is not the only pension plan that has made promises to its workers and failed to set aside the funds to keep those promises. Out of nearly 1,400 union-run or “multiemployer” pension plans across the U.S., 85 percent of them are less than 70 percent funded, and they have promised $500 billion more than they can pay.

The second proposed “funding” mechanism is a taxpayer loan to the insolvent pension plan—which is no different than a straight-up bailout. When there’s virtually no chance of repayment, that’s not a “secure loan.”

Polish Catholics pray at borders 'to save country'

KODE? (POLAND) (AFP) - Thousands of Polish Catholics formed human chains on the country's borders Saturday, begging God "to save Poland and the world" in an event many viewed as a spiritual weapon against the "Islamisation" of Europe.

Reciting "Rosary to the Borders", they called to be protected from the dangers facing them. The episcopate insisted that it was a purely religious initiative.

The goal was to have as many prayer points as possible along Poland's 3,511-kilometre (2,200-mile) border with Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia and the Baltic Sea.

You can also select "incident type" at the bottom of that list and choose what type of crimes you want to see on the map. On the right side (middle of the map) it says LIST. Click on that and select the "INCIDENTS" tab at the top. Once you do that it will show all the crimes from the dates you selected. You can also click on each incident to see more information. At the top of the page you can select "CREATE AN ALERT" you can fill in the information and they will send you a report in email either daily, weekly or monthly. Once you get the alert there will be a blue bar in the email. Click on that and it will open the map to show you where the incident happened. The report just tells what crimes were committed not a date or time. Clicking on the map will tell you that information.

Will Liberals Give Weinstein the O’Reilly Treatment?

I’ll never forget the one time I laid eyes on Harvey Weinstein outside the pages of Vanity Fair. It was at a movie premiere in Manhattan in 2014. My sister and I got up before the film started for a pre-emptive bathroom run. As we left the theater, we couldn’t avoid walking past Mr. Weinstein, who was pressed up close to a younger, much smaller man in the hallway.

Mr. Weinstein was inches from the younger man, pointing fingers at his face, swearing at him and threatening him. The man being berated was flush against the wall. He stood there, taking it, not saying a word.

I’d read enough profiles of Mr. Weinstein to know about his money troubles and his gorgeous wife and his boiling temper. Still, I’d never seen a person talk to another that way. It shocked me. But the most astonishing thing about it was that this happened in public — at a Weinstein-produced movie, no less. Powerful people streamed by this shameful interaction and said nothing.

As it turns out, younger, less powerful women say his bullying, predatory behavior toward them was equally unconcealed. But it took dogged Times reporters to nail down the details and they are vile.

Schumer to Trump: Obamacare Repeal 'Off the Table'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday he told President Donald Trump Democratic lawmakers were willing to work with him on making needed fixes to the Affordable Care Act, but that repeal of the law was "off the table," The Hill reported.

"The president wanted to make another run at repeal and replace and I told the president that's off the table," Schumer said in a statement about a phone call he had with Trump on Friday.

"If he wants to work together to improve the existing health care system, we Democrats are open to his suggestions. A good place to start might be the Alexander-Murray negotiations that would stabilize the system and lower costs," Schumer added.

Williams: Blacks vs. Police

Let’s throw out a few numbers so we can put in perspective the NFL players taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem. Many say they are protesting against police treatment of blacks and racial discrimination. We might ask just how much sense their protest makes.

According to The Washington Post, 737 people have been shot and killed by police this year in the United States. Of that number, there were 329 whites, 165 blacks, 112 Hispanics, 24 members of other races and 107 people whose race was unknown. In Illinois, home to one of our most dangerous cities — Chicago — 18 people have been shot and killed by police this year. In the city itself, police have shot and killed 10 people and shot and wounded 10 others. Somebody should ask the kneeling black NFL players why they are protesting this kind of killing in the Windy City and ignoring other sources of black death.

Here are the Chicago numbers for the ignored deaths. So far in 2017, there have been 533 murders and 2,880 shootings. On average, a person is shot every two hours and 17 minutes and murdered every 12 ½ hours. In 2016, when Colin Kaepernick started taking a knee, Chicago witnessed 806 murders and 4,379 shootings. It turns out that most of the murder victims are black. Adding to the tragedy is the fact that Chicago has a 12.7 percent murder clearance rate. That means that when a black person is murdered, his perpetrator is found and charged with his murder less than 13 percent of the time.

Similar statistics regarding police killing blacks versus blacks killing blacks apply to many of our predominantly black urban centers, such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, St. Louis and Oakland. Many Americans, including me, see the black NFL player protest of police brutality as pathetic, useless showboating. Seeing as these players have made no open protest against the thousands of blacks being murdered and maimed by blacks, they must view it as trivial in comparison with the police killings.

Most of the police killings fit into the category of justified homicide.

Why Are Hemp Farmers Fed Up with Federal Seed Laws?

Even though the cultivation of industrial hemp is now legal for research and development purposes in a number of states, farmers who are trying to revitalize the American hemp industry are facing myriad legal issues related to the acquisition of their most important resource: viable hemp seeds. These issues stem from the fact that although states may have legislation for growing industrial hemp, it is still illegal under federal law. For no reason that any sane person can comprehend, industrial hemp — with THC levels below 0.3% — is still classified as a Schedule I controlled substance.

For farmers, the problems start with finding sources of certified seed to plant. Because hemp has been illegal in the US for decades, there are practically no American sources for hemp seeds. For the few, small quantity domestic suppliers who exist, interstate shipping of seeds is so heavily regulated that it is virtually impossible to move them across state lines.

Public’s Help Sought As Investigation of ATM Burglaries Continue In Dorchester Co. and Queen Anne’s Co.

(CAMBRIDGE, MD) – Investigators search for suspects responsible for ATM burglaries in Dorchester and Queen Anne’s County and urge anyone with relevant information to call police.

Shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning, Easton Barrack received a 911 call from the Dorchester 911 Center advising of a glass breakage alarm at a convenience store in Cambridge. Investigators from the Easton Barrack and State Police crime scene technicians responded to the scene to process it for evidence and continue the investigation.

The investigation revealed two suspects forced entry into the business by breaking the glass in front of the building. The suspects were wearing dark clothing, masks and gloves. Upon entering the business, the suspects backed a dark colored pickup truck up to the store, hooked a chain or rope to the ATM machine and pulled it through the front of the building.

Approximately 35 – 45 minutes prior, police believe the same suspects committed the same crime at a convenience store in Queen Anne’s County. This incident is being investigated by the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Department. Police believe the possible suspect vehicle involved in both crimes is a dark colored Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Easton Barrack at 410-822-3101 as police continue to search area businesses and neighborhoods. The investigation is continuing.
