Senate panel approves charter school measure

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —A Maryland Senate panel on Tuesday approved a heavily reworked version of Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's proposal to ease restrictions on the state's charter-schools law.

The Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee voted 10-1 for the measure, sending it to the full Senate for consideration this week. Committee members said the bill was the product of considerable compromise after long discussions.

"Nobody's going to be completely happy," said Sen. Joan Conway, a Baltimore Democrat who chairs the committee. "I haven't been happy since the day I saw this bill."

Tampons have been hailed by scientists as an effective way to identify pollution in rivers.

A new study led by David Lerner, a professor of environmental engineering at the University of Sheffield, helped identify specific households where pipes are misdirecting sewage into rivers rather than treatment plants.

During the study, the tampons were suspended on rods above 16 different surface water outlets which ran into rivers and streams. Afterwards they were dipped in diluted detergent for five seconds, where nine of them showed up optical brighteners (chemical compounds) under ultraviolet light, indicating the presence of water pollution.

MORE TRANSGENDER SHOWS COMING TO TV

With transgender programming becoming the new normal of TV entertainment, two additional shows have been announced to assist in highlighting the lives of the transgender community.

With the success of Netflix’s Orange is the new Black, and Amazon’s Golden Globe Award-winning series Transparent, a number of transgender-themed programs and characters have been introduced in recent months.

On April 11, Discovery Life network will join the craze when it launches its first original series. Titled New Girls on the Block, the reality show will feature six transgender women in varying stages of transition living in Kansas City, Mo, per Entertainment Weekly.

Additionally, this summer, ABC Family will debut Becoming Us, which is reported to be a real-life version of Amazon’s Transparent. EW reports the unscripted show will focus on a 17-year-old Chicago teen named Ben Lehwald, whose dad, Charlie, undergoes sexual-reassignment surgery to become a woman named Carly.

The Latest Bombshell from Mrs. Clinton’s Lawyer

Did the former secretary of state delete pertinent e-mails while subject to congressional investigation? Hillary Clinton’s lawyers confirmed what many have suspected since her remarks at a U.N. press conference earlier this month: She has wiped her server clean of any e-mails that she didn’t turn over to the State Department. In so doing, Mrs. Clinton has given her critics more reason to suspect that she is up to no good and yet further reason that Mrs. Clinton should keep those lawyers on speed dial.

In the ongoing saga of Hillary Clinton’s exclusive use of a private server at her Chappaqua, N.Y., home, the latest bomb was thrown by her lawyer, David Kendall (of Bill Clinton impeachment fame). Late last week, Mr. Kendall wrote a lengthy letter to the Benghazi Select Committee to respond to Chairman Trey Gowdy’s demand that she turn over her server for inspection and analysis by a “neutral detached and independent third-party.” Mr. Kendall flatly refused the demand, suggesting that the committee lacked the authority to request it. But for good measure, Kendall explained that review of the server would be fruitless. After her personal lawyers reviewed the e-mails to determine which records Mrs. Clinton should return to the State Department, she “chose not to keep her non-record personal e-mails and asked that her account (which was no longer in active use) be set to retain only the most recent 60 days of e-mail.”

Georgetown - The Delaware State Police are issuing a Gold Alert for Jordan S. Powell of Georgetown who was last heard from around 11:30 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday March 31, 2015.

Government Agents Steal $1 Million

Two former federal agents stand accused of stealing $1 million in digital currency during the course of an investigation. Carl Force was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. He was arrested in Baltimore and was in custody as of yesterday. Former Secret Service agent Shaun Bridges is free on bail in San Francisco.

Prosecutors said the pair used their computer skills to steal bitcoins from the operator of an online drug bazaar. They say the pair appears to have been working independently of one another. Force and Bridges are accused of wire fraud, money laundering and theft of government property. The operator of the web site, known as Silk Road, was eventually convicted.

Government Smartphones

Pentagon employees are trying out smartphones known for being spy-resistant. NextGov reports the firm Silent Circle created the Android-based phones. Users log onto the same phone under multiple personas with separate security restrictions. So a user could browse Facebook and family photos under one persona, and classified work emails on another. But it's all on the same device. A former Navy SEAL founded Silent Circle. It's now based in Switzerland. The Defense Department, not Silent Circle, configures mobile email so that it goes through military servers.
