Special Session Reaps Dividends For Lower Shore

“Infusing Republican Principles into a Democratic Bill”
by Delegate Michael McDermott
by Delegate Michael McDermott
The recent Special Session centered on the business of gaming in Maryland. As the governor sought support for the legislation, I was provided an open opportunity to help craft a bill which will do more to support our local interests. This dialogue resulted in significant changes to the bill which will have a tremendous impact across the state, on the lower shore, and, specifically, for Worcester County.
When the original bill was passed in 2007 authorizing casinos in Maryland, a significant portion of our local impact money was sent to Baltimore City (18%) and Prince George’s County ($1 million). This was hardly appropriate as neither entity was being impacted by Ocean Downs. This was found out, after the fact, when somebody decided to read the bill.
My discussions focussed on these kickbacks to the western shore. We also reviewed the restrictions placed on Ocean Downs which are not applied to any other site in the state (they included: no hotel, no convention center, no free food or drinks, and limited entertainment to a single piano player). My discussions with Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan indicated a strong desire to keep the restrictions in place, but an understanding that some flexibility on the entertainment issue may be reasonable. I expressed this in my negotiations and the mayor also lobbied Senate President Miller and House Speaker Busch.
The result was a bill which addressed the restrictions while relaxing the entertainment provisions. Further, it provided an additional $200,000.00 annual grant to Worcester County and a 5% return of local impact money achieved from table games in Prince George’s County to Worcester County. It also provided relief for the owner/operators by reducing their tax rate from 67% to 57%, a recognition by the Lottery Commission that Ocean Downs has been posting losses over $2 million since opening. It was a good start, but it did not address the 18% transfer to Baltimore City.
With the bill in the House of Delegates, I worked toward the goal of making the bill better. Two amendments were offered which made a significant difference. As a member of the Veteran’s Caucus, I was pleased that we were able to secure support for an amendment allowing American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War Posts in the state to have a few slot machines just as those on the Eastern Shore have had for years. Proceeds will be directed to our veterans through established funds while also supporting the local posts and lodges. This provision had been sought for years and I was happy that the opportunity had finally arrived.
The issue of Baltimore City’s cut of our local impact dollars was also addressed by way of a House amendment. That change will return 100% of the money to us which had previously been given to Baltimore City, and it will happen for all three rural casinos. This was a big win.
It is interesting that the democrats have confessed by this legislation that cutting taxes and reducing regulations are good for business and job growth in Maryland. As many of our businesses are hurting and jobs are on the line, perhaps they will be willing to do for all Maryland business and industry what they have seen as needed for gaming. I will be reminding them on a regular basis.
This legislation will result in thousands of jobs (permanent and temporary) created in Maryland and billions in economic investment. Now the matter will go to the voters in November.
If you believe there is a “war on rural Maryland”, this marks the beginning of reparations.
VP Biden Wins Prestigious "Postpony" Award

No changes in Social Security?? Joe B "guarantees" that? Who is he making this promise to? There are only two possibilities. Either Biden is flat out lying, or he is a fool.
Social Security is a “here and now” issue. It should be a matter that is part of the debate in the coming election. Charles Blahous, a Social Security Trustee, had this to say last weekend about the current status of America’s biggest entitlement program (Link).

RED FLAGS WAVING EVERYWHERE
You’ve got DHS buying enormous amounts of ammo. You’ve got the U.S. military conducting “training” exercises in Boston, Chicago, and numerous other cities across the country. You’ve got the Federal Reserve telling the biggest Wall Street banks to prepare for a disaster. You’ve got the President issuing Executive Orders which give him absolute power over all commerce in the U.S. You’ve got the government putting out increasingly fraudulent data about the economy. The NDAA allows the government to imprison citizens without charge. The government is piling up $3.8 billion of debt per day. There are 240 million working age Americans and only 140 million of them working. Only 100 million are employed full-time. The real youth unemployment rate is 40%. The real overall unemployment rate is 22%. Real wages are lower than they were in 1971.
The ruling elite are clearly nervous. They have pillaged this country. The people are growing restless. They are starting to realize they’ve been screwed. The anger is building. The upcoming financial collapse will trigger social unrest, protests, and violence. Our owners are preparing. You should prepare too. We outnumber them by 30 to 1. They will need more ammo.

LESBIAN SUES LIBERTY U OVER MISSING EX-PARTNER
A lesbian is suing the university and church founded by Jerry Falwell for allegedly helping a former partner who became a Christian and forsook homosexual behavior flee the U.S. with the convert’s biological child.
The case brought in federal court in Vermont by Janet Jenkins seeks money for legal fees, emotional distress and other alleged injuries from Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va.
The action was brought just as a Mennonite pastor unrelated to the university or church was convicted of helping Lisa Miller flee. Miller, a former member of the Thomas Road Baptist Church, traveled with her daughter to Canada, then to Nicaragua, where she was last known to reside.
NYC CLERK BRUTALLY ATTACKED FOR REFUSING TO SELL BEER TO A FOOD STAMP CUSTOMER
An allegedly intoxicated man on Thursday attacked a store clerk in Brooklyn, N.Y., after he was told he couldn’t buy a $1.25 bottle of beer with his food stamp card, the NY Daily News reports.
“Sell it to me,” the food stamp customer yelled at the Yemeni husband and father, Mutahar Murshed Ali. “Don’t get me mad.”
Despite the threat, Ali, who believes his aggressor was buying for a minor, refused to sell the man the 22-ounce bottle of Colt 45. The allegedly drunk man yelled a racial slur, left for a minute, came back, and then attacked Ali’s face with a knife, slashing him from his top lip to his left sideburn. Could Michael Phelps LOSE His Medals?
- Rule 40 in the International Olympic Committee's guidebook states that no athlete is able to participate in non-Olympic marketing during the Games and a specified period afterwards
- The Louis Vuitton ads surfaced on Twitter and various websites on August 13, which fell within the banned time frameAs the most decorated Olympian of all time, it was only a matter of time before Michael Phelps landed a major fashion endorsement. But in posing for the Louis Vuitton campaign images that surfaced on Twitter on August 13, 2012, the U.S. Olympic swimmer may be stripped of his medals, four gold and two silver, from the London 2012 Games.
ALABAMA WOMAN SHOOTS HOME INTRUDER TO PROTECT HERSELF AND HER AX- AND KNIFE-WIELDING DAUGHTERS
An Alabama woman said she was forced to shoot an intruder that broke into her home this week in order to protect herself and her daughters.
Martha Lewis of Dora, Ala. told WVTM-TV it was about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning when she heard a loud noise, which turned out to be someone kicking in her door. Lewis said she called the police and grabbed her gun, then went to her daughters’ room and told them each to get something to defend themselves with. She said one grabbed an ax and one got a butcher knife.
CONTROVERSIAL ‘JIHAD ADS’ APPEARING ON SAN FRANCISCO BUSES — AND THEY AREN’T COMING DOWN
“In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad,” reads a controversial ad displayed in San Francisco’s Municipal Railway buses.
And as of now, despite the outcry, it’s not coming down.
“Muni officials spoke on Wednesday, addressing the ads purchased by the American Freedom Defense Initiative [which, of course, has been labelled a "hate group"] that contains a message that has been called ‘anti-Islam’ by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL),” CBS San Francisco reports.
California Parks Aides Used 'Katrina Codes' To Pay Managers Overtime
California parks officials apparently used obscure payroll codes intended for wildfires and disasters such as Hurricane Katrina to turn vacation time into overtime pay for managers, the state controller's office testified Wednesday.
The state payroll system generally blocks managers from receiving overtime, said John Hiber, the state controller's chief operating officer, at a Senate oversight hearing. But override codes exist for rare cases such as Department of Forestry and Fire Protection employees fighting wildfires or emergency workers providing disaster relief.

Brewing Up Love: Weddings Tap Craft Beer Craze
You may now chug with the bride.
Toasting the bride and groom with Champagne is de rigueur. But recently, couples hip (or is that hops?) to craft beers are shaking up the wedding reception scene by insisting on serving the brews they love on their big day, everything from local ales to home brews concocted by the bride and groom.
It's not unusual for stouts and pilsners to flow at receptions or for rehearsal dinners to feature "beer flight" tastings of different craft brews. The high-end Baltimore caterer Chef's Expressions offers hors d'oeuvres consisting of a shot glass of beer and a burger slider.
NEVADA MEDIA CALLS BERKLEY ATTACK AD 'LAUGHABLE'
Democratic Congressman Shelley Berkley's Campaign for Senate released a television ad that claimed her opponent, incumbent Republican Senator Dean Heller, was implicated in a $64 million diamond scam. By Monday, every major media outlet in Nevada declared the ad was false.
John L. Smith at the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported:
The television commercial accuses former Nevada Secretary of State Heller of failing to interrupt the $64 million fraud perpetrated at Urban Casavant's CMKM Diamonds Inc. while it was printing and selling, authorities alleged, 800 billion shares of worthless stock to 40,000 starry-eyed investors.

Conservative Steps In To Pay Hospital Bill For Obama's Sick Brother...
A few days ago I received a call from a man I recently met named George. He was a bit flustered, and soon informed me that his young son was sick with a chest condition. He pleaded with me to send him $1,000 to cover the medical bills. Since George was at the hospital I asked him to let me speak to a nurse, and she confirmed that George’s son was indeed ill. So I agreed to send George the money through Western Union. He was profusely grateful. But before I hung up I asked George, “Why are you coming to me?” He said, “I have no one else to ask.” Then he said something that astounded me, “Dinesh, you are like a brother to me.”
Actually, George has a real life brother who just happens to be the president of the United States. (George Obama is the youngest of eight children sired by Barack Obama Sr.) George’s brother is a multimillionaire and the most powerful man in the world. Moreover, George’s brother has framed his re-election campaign around the “fair share” theme that we owe obligations to those who are less fortunate.
One of Obama’s favorite phrases comes right out of the Bible: “We are our brother’s keeper.” Yet he has not contributed a penny to help his own brother. And evidently George does not believe, even in times of emergency, that he can turn to his brother in the White House for help.
OBAMA SUED OVER LATEST ATTACK ON CONSTITUTION
Judicial Watch, the Washington-based organization that monitors government misbehavior and challenges it in court when needed, has filed a lawsuit demanding from the Obama administration the details of the new amnesty program that was installed by executive order.
Congress several times has rejected amnesty for illegal aliens, but Obama’s plan allows immigrants who can prove they arrived in the U.S. before they reached 16, and now are 30 or younger, to obtain special permission to work in the U.S.
Unemployment rates rose in 44 U.S. states in July
Unemployment rates rose in 44 U.S. states in July, the most states to show a monthly increase in more than three years and a reflection of weak hiring nationwide.
The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment rates fell in only two states and were unchanged in four.
Unemployment rates rose in nine states that are considered battlegrounds in the presidential election. That trend, if it continued, could pose a threat to President Barack Obama’s re-election bid in less than three months.
Why Liberals Behave the Way They Do
My smash best-seller “Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America” has just come out in paperback — and not a moment too soon! Democrats always become especially mob-like during presidential election campaigns.
The “root cause” of the Democrats’ wild allegations against Republicans, their fear of change, their slogans and insane metaphors, are all explained by mass psychology, diagnosed more than a century ago by the French psychologist Gustave Le Bon, on whose work much of my own book is based.
Le Bon’s 1896 book, “The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind,” was carefully read by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini in order to learn how to incite mobs. Our liberals could have been Le Bon’s study subjects.
