Stop Fracked Gas Pipeline on Maryland Eastern Shore

The Eastern Shore Natural Gas Company (ESNG) wants to build 19+ miles of new pipeline to carry fracked gas from Delaware through Maryland. The pipeline is already under construction in Delaware to carry gas from that state into Maryland. The seven miles of pipeline proposed for Maryland would supply concentrated animal feeding operations, businesses, and residential areas. The two “anchor” customers for gas delivery are the Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Somerset County. If built, the Del-Mar pipeline would trigger another pipeline to connect the prison to the university. The public has been consistently left in the dark by the Hogan Administration when it comes to these dangerous projects. But we do know that these pipelines would cross farms, forests, and countless waterways that feed into the Chesapeake Bay. They would also worsen global warming, bringing more sea-level rise to the already vulnerable tidal regions of the Eastern Shore.

Somerset County officials are advocating that the pipeline be built, citing badly needed economic development. However, they appear to have not considered renewable energy options. The cost to taxpayers for the pipeline will be approximately $500 million, and the project will hamper our state goals to be utilizing 50% renewable energy by 2030. At a time when the Maryland state budget is so tight, it is perplexing why Gov. Hogan would not want to pursue less expensive energy alternatives. In addition, it is disturbing that although Marylanders have made it clear that they want to pursue cleaner, renewable energy by passing the Clean Energy Jobs Act in 2019, Gov. Hogan is still relying on fossil fuels.

So what are we(as a nation) going to do with all of the natural gas that is released when fracking shale for oil? Shall we just release the gas into the air, shall we store it indefinitely someplace, or should we just burn it off in the field.

we need this why?

Rock on. Fracking will create jobs and it's safe. Dont be fooled by liberals

You cite costs for natural gas. Please address hard costs for your renewable energy. Don’t forget to consider Crisfield’s endeavors into renewable energy....... Also, your renewable energy may not come from China without addressing the entire carbon footprint of your renewable energy. I’m truly waiting for a response. Thanks.

How would it be anymore damaging than the pipeline already in place along route 13 or any other area. The gas would not be “fracked” on the eastern shore.

Anonymous said...

I’m for it safe clean natural gas keeps America less dependent on foreign countries that rip us off and cause prices to rise

Your Facebook page said it would impact 1200 square feet of streams (approx 34 feet by 34feet) and 16000 square feet of wetland (approx 126 x 126), where did you get these numbers?

Gee, it sounds like "fracked" gas is more dangerous than "regular" gas. What are the "less expensive" options? Buying batteries to store wind, and solar energy?

I would not believe or listen to a word these people say. Just pushing propaganda.

Well thought out explanation, thanks.

I am all for this pipeline to be built!

Only seven miles of pipeline?? And your crying about that?? Get The F--K out of Here!!! Waaaaaaaaaa!!!

Go BURN your cross somewhere else Susan Olsen!

Sierra Club has a very poor track record...They 'cry wolf' continually and their stats are never to be trusted...BEWARE of them...

On the other hand; I would Never trust Larry Hogan...so there we are.

Ms. Olsen, please stop worrying. The Eastern Shore needs all the natural and man-made resources it can safely acquire. The jobs and economic benefits are a must have, as long as they are brought here cleanly and safely, and, with the people's consent.

"They would also worsen global warming, bringing more sea-level rise to the already vulnerable tidal regions of the Eastern Shore."

Uh, how would that work?

What does this babbling say ?

It’s a great idea build it

she is sierra club, out of san fran, go back to your lawless city you dirt bag.

Build it. If renewable energy is so efficient why did Chesapeake College in Easton decommission it's wind turbine? Global warming because of a pipeline? Please stop insulting our intelligence.

The heating plant for ECI was an abomination from the start. They've pumped millions into it over the years, burning everything from chicken litter (a failure) to wood chips (an overpriced, expensive failure). A clean burning fuel would be a welcomed bargain for taxpayers and a plus for the environment, and reduce operating and maintenance costs at the plant.

Actually, by bringing Nat Gas to Princess Anne, carbon emissions will be reduced.

But, it's no surprise that the Sierra Club lies.

well personally sue olsen can kiss my ass along with her liberal bs! she would do better campaigning to close eci and umes! now that's something most of us would agree on.

Duh. You people act like it's rocket science or something. Try using that thing in your head called a brain for once in your life. JOBS.

Sierra Club no longer represents the environment, it represents the left, which supports renewables even though wind and solar require massive amounts of land for very little energy. Solar panels are built in China. Utility scale solar has transferred billions of US dollars to China while increasing electricity costs. Stop lying Sierra Club.

Another liberal pipe dream failure

This statement by Susan Olsen is chocked full of lies.

"dangerous project" What is dangerous about a gas pipeline? In the U.S. there 305,000 miles of gas pipelines.

"Worsen global warming" This statement is just plain bullcrap

"and the project will hamper our state goals to be utilizing 50% renewable energy by 2030" This panacea will never be met.

"it is perplexing why Gov. Hogan would not want to pursue less expensive energy alternatives." There is no other less expensive energy source than natural gas.

People like Susan Olsen need to be called out when they make these ridiculous statements.

Renewable energy remains a higher cost per kilowatt. I don't see where you mentioned that aspect.

If we need jobs so bad why is it that the existing employers cannot find anyone to hire now? Sherwin Williams, ECI, etc are constantly looking for employees and can't find them. We don't need more jobs, that is just a myth. Use "your" brain 8:12, don't believe all you hear.

It means the author states the cost to the tax payers for the pipeline as a deterrent as the author wants renewable energy instead. However, they do not consider the cost of their “green/renewable” energy. When one considers the total carbon foot print of producing this green energy, it’s much higher than that of petroleum based, especially since the majority of the solar panels are produced in China. The
so called cost savings of wind energy here on the shore can be referenced through the debacle of the wind turbine in Crisfield and Chesapeake College. Both municipalities weee sold a bill of goods that would be a cost savings, both of which did not work out. Is that babble cleared for you or are you just too brain washed and dense?

What a load of nonsensical gibberish. Natural gas is a superior fuel, and will replace higher cost, higher polluting forms of energy.

I'm open to cogent arguments; this wasn't one. Pipeline will cause seas to raise? Puhleez!

Anonymous said...

This is nothing new. We have had natural gas pipelines on the shore for decades. They are all mostly underground except for the connections and valves. Nothing inherently more dangerous with the newer lines, NOTHING! Much ado about nothing. Where the gas comes from means nothing. Natural gas from fracking is current the cheapest fuel on the planet. It is a byproduct of fracking and would just be burned off into the atmosphere is it wasn't captured for fuel use. This is a non-issue. Throwing the trigger word "fracking" into a complaint about underground pipelines, doesn't validate the complaint.

Susan Olsen is a flake. I'd like to see her be to first to survive without any fossil fuels. That's means not using anything manufactured using fossil fuels and not using fossil fuels for her daily living. Now that would be a "pipe" dream.

oh no said...

How did Olsen get out of rehab ?

lock in or soon to be said...

Its my understanding that Homeland Security has been keeping an eye on Susan Olsen.

Reliable sources stated they have evidence of her sending checks to foreign nations that support terror against the United States

one source was a FBI liasion from Missouri on her terror connections.

7:34 AM - The CCC turbine was more for show than anything else. It became a financial albatross when breakdowns became the norm and parts became difficult to find.

Natural Gas is homegrown, meaning we are not sending our dollars to Saudi Arabia or China.

Wind and solar harm rural communities with it's massive land grab, increased transmission, and lower property values.

I remember when our Nation was dependant on the middle east for energy and gas lines for fuel. The greenies would take us

Fracking does not create that many jobs.

It's a GD pipeline! It's got nothing to do with fracking.

I don't give two shits what any young or old crazy dirty, hairy legs & arm pit hippie has to say about anything!

ECI was already being fueled by renewalable energy, pulp wood from locally grown sustainable managed forestlands, another blow to the local forest industry. I believe we only have four outlets <10% for forest products when we used to have 15 and a healthy 50 million local industry. Maryland will be buying up more private lands now.

Anonymous said...

Well meaning, surely, but unrealistic in so many ways. Hyperbole and histrionics don't help.

Anonymous said...

We need all jobs

Anonymous said...

That’s why the left is against it they’re loyalties are with China

Anonymous said...

Multiple energy resources are good. If people want gas they can have gas. If they want solar they can have solar. There's nothing wrong with it. The Sierra Club's position is Pro-Choice when it comes to abortion, but not when it comes to energy. Sounds like a contradiction and double standard to me.

Anonymous said...

ECI has well over 1000 employees who make an excellent salary. They spend millions of dollars in the local community and pay millions in state and local income taxes.
You seem to be one of the many disgruntled individuals who applied for a job there but was disqualified for some reason.

Bottom line. Democrats want to stop job producing fracking jobs and feel their more expensive few jobs plan is better. Fracking will end if Biden is elected and so will jobs.
