Only 15 percent of eighth graders in the United States scored at or above proficiency level in U.S. history on the 2018 assessments known as the Nation’s Report Card, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) revealed Thursday.
Eighth graders in the United States once again showed a decline in U.S. history and geography test scores, and made no progress in civics, according to the assessment results.
Scores in U.S. history and geography plunged between 2014 and 2018. Approximately 43,000 eighth graders took the assessment in early 2018.
Peggy G. Carr, associate commissioner of assessment at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) also said in a statement, “These assessments challenge students to show their knowledge and skills as they prepare to become full participants in American democracy.”
U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos called the results on the Nation’s Report Card “inexcusable.”
“And only 15% of them have a reasonable knowledge of U.S. history,” she added. “All Americans should take a moment to think about the concerning implications for the future of our country.”

The evil dumbocrats that run the schools don't want your kids to know anything about US history. It make it much easier to indoctrinate them and slowly neutralize the constitution.
Dumbocrats have unhealthy need for power and control. Just look at what the dumbocrat governors (and Hogan the terrible) have done with our freedoms in just 1 month.
The progressives are actively re-writing history. Literally. My nephew is a lefty and that is his job. Destroying America from within.

I don't think today's 8th graders know much about anything unless it involves texting pointless gibberish. They can't make change for a dollar. Dem's seem to control the school system and want everyone to go to college and learn liberalism.
Best College in America. I support them; we all should to help keep their teachings free.

US History in general is out of fashion amongst the elite who dictate the curriculum.
We're bad because of slavery, although 100s of thousands of non-slave owners gave their lives or were wounded/crippled trying to free the slaves.
We're bad because not everyone makes 50k or 100k or more per year; screwing around in school or in life and settling for mediocre is society's fault.
Our Framers set the highest standards for us; at times we've fallen short. But that should not obscure what we have achieved for our citizens and that is why those eager to taste freedom and opportunity continue to hope to live here.
The curriculum planners need to accentuate the positive and to spur students' interest in US History and pride in our country.
