BSA's loss is Trail Life's gain

While the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) membership continues to drop, a Christian alternative to the scouting organization continues to grow.

As was expected. Mormons have pulled their boys out of the BSA – an estimated loss of 400,000 members as the organization allows homosexual members and leaders and permits girls to join.

"We're not really surprised at the Mormons' decision to do that, and, as you know, our culture seems to be more and more divided," comments Mark Hancock, head of Trail Life USA. "Parents and organizations are making decisions that best reflect their values, and the Mormons have said that they can no longer go along with the values that the Boy Scouts are beginning to pursue."

Trail Life USA, which is Christian-based, was formed knowing that parents wanted an organization that agreed with their values and was specifically focused on boys.

I am an Eagle Scout from a local troop. We were one of the largest troops in the area at one point. There were one or two kids that we knew were gay but no one ever talked about it and they didn't feel the need to flaunt it. Adult leadership was all parents however the older kids were the ones tasked with running the troop. There were trips, like our annual skiing trip, where sisters of the boys in the troop were invited to join. Scouting was hands down the greatest experience of my youth. It upsets me to see the organization being dragged down in this lose-lose battle. I have a daughter now and when she is old enough, if she wants to be involved in scouts I would happily allow her to participate.

When the Boy Scouts started to lose their morals, my son transferred from Boy Scout Troop 151 at Asbury United Methodist Church to the Royal Rangers Outpost 178 at delmmarva Evangelistic Church. The nice thing about the Royal Rangers is that a Scout's Merit are compatible and can be plugged into the Royal Rangers merits. So they don't have to start from scratch. We did miss all the people at troop 151 though it was a great Troop. Our Outpost has camped out with Trail life in Fruitland before. We have offered them assistance since they are fairly new.

It's a transition thing like alot of things. Calm down. If you don't like where BSA is heading don't join. Seems an alternative is popping up. My sons were in cub, and boy scouts years ago. I wouldn't let them join now. And that's my choice. Be good decent parents, and provide a good home. That's the best club in the world.
