Maryland bill would ban balloon releases

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Letting a balloon float away in Maryland would draw in a fine of $250, under a bill sponsored by Sen. Clarence Lam, D-Howard and Baltimore counties, legislation that is similar to a Queen Anne’s County law.

Lam said he hopes that this bill does two things: reduces the amount of waste that ends up in the environment, and raises awareness of the need to properly dispose of balloons.

He said there would be a $250 civil fine for each act of intentionally releasing a balloon, but no one would go to prison for it because it’s not considered a criminal offense.

Lam said that the state, unlike in Queen Anne’s County, will not allow biodegradable balloons.

MD politicians... tackling the most important and critical legislation. The circus is a more serious act than this body of government.

Northwest Woodsman: With all the monumental problems in the state of Maryland, they focus on really critical issues don’t they?

Wow, such a milestone for the public. Maybe they should get on the Hindenburg and fly away themselves for as much good as they do.

And,they get paid (by "we, the people") to do this asinine sh**.

Baltimore is so dangerous, the residents don't go anywhere alone and they spend DAYS debating a balloon law.

Keep cheering.

Go to court and demand evidence to be presented, particularly the balloon in question. Case dismissed.

Those Libtards will pass this bill while Frosh continues to sue the Trump Administration with frivolous lawsuits.

Stand by, Wicomico County is being pressured by outsiders to bass this stupid balloon bill when their own counties won't!

Well you better tell your leader, Bob Culver that because he is trying to pass balloon legislation for Wicomico County.

COASTAL SUPPORTS PROPOSED BALLOON RELEASE BAN IN WICOMICO COUNTY
September 27, 2019

"On behalf of the Coastal Association of REALTORS®, I write to support the legislation submitted by County Executive Bob Culver to ban intentional balloon releases in Wicomico County."

"...from 2008 to 2016, almost 300,000 balloons were found on U.S. beaches."

-----

Well if they only found 300,000 balloons on beaches across the U.S. in 8 years then it sounds to me that these precious animals aren't really eating these balloons as they claim. That's just 37,000 per year so it isn't much. This legislation is a JOKE!

There won't be any evidence so no one will be prosecuted. It's not against the law to sell balloons, it's not against the law to sell helium, it's not against the law to sell twine and it's not against the law to sell helium-filled balloons so this will have a very limited and minimal impact on the prevention of balloons being released.

What a freaking waste of time. We've got crime and criminal thugs in our schools and our elected officials want to waste time, money and resources on legislation that can't be enforced. This is a joke.

Only liberals support this kind of legislation.
