The Precarious Future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities

It has been an open secret for several decades that the writing is on the wall for most historically black colleges and universities.

Since 1989, eight historically black colleges and universities have closed because of lost accreditation or bankruptcy. The reasons are myriad, but principally because these institutions no longer command a monopoly on attendees created by de jure segregation. For the past half-century, they have had to compete for students among mainstream public and private institutions, as well as for-profit educational institutions.

But the changing market dynamics do not tell the entire story, especially because some historically black colleges and universities such as Howard University, Morehouse College, and Fisk University continue to thrive in a competitive landscape.

Plus with the diversity bullshit, blacks who aren't qualified to get in to certain universities are let in and then fail out because it's above them. More leftist unintended consequences. If they went where they could thrive they would get ahead in life alot better. Every time leftist programs are implemented on one end, the other end crumbles. What I just stated is fact not racist. And facts don't care about your feelings snowflakes.

Everyone around here knows that UMES is failing. But who wants to be the person to point that out and then be accused of racism? No administrator in the university of maryland system want to have the legacy of being the person who is shutting the historically black college down.

NOTHING more than a FREE EDUCATION on my dime. How disgraceful it is to be black. They can't do ANYTHING without a handout. They are given EVERYTHING and what is our return?? THEY HATE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. ESPECIALLY IF YOUR WHITE. Where ever you go. LOOK how they look at you. THEY HATE YOU.

Two prongs: As noted, the end of segregation opened doors to well qualified and less qualified black students. The good ones could thrive and the less talented might still forge ahead.

Leaving a noticeable gap in candidates for HBCUs to enroll. Their once marginal candidates now became their main prospects and they chose to enroll totally unprepared students to keep dorms and classes filled, tuition flowing and, to a certain extent, out of altruism.

Inbound SATs, where even used anymore, are woeful. Graduation rates are a scandal, and 4 years is no longer a useful benchmark for how long the student will have to attend to grab their degree. Consequently, the degrees from these schools are devalued. The student, OTOH, has been pumped full of unearned self esteem because it's a closed system and basically immune from critique by academia outside the HBCU club.

Those at the helm are a big part of the problem, and realistically should be curtailing admission, upgrading faculty, and insisting on better academics from students as the blueprint for viability.

As noted, the HBCUs that were at the top of the heap are continuing to be selective and more successful.

As a society we're becoming aware that college is a bad bargain for many students, without regard to their race. More so for HBCU kids without the needed academic skills.
