Muslim Amazon employees say they fear taking time to pray at work, are discriminated against in several ways

Three Muslim employees at an Amazon warehouse in Minneapolis say they "have experienced discriminatory treatment, hostile work environment, retaliation, and constructive discharge" at work, according to a letter written by Muslim Advocates.

The advocacy group says the three women, identified only as Ms. A, Ms. B. and Ms. C., are all black women of Somali origin. They feel they are being discriminated against on the basis of their race, religion, and national origin — and they say they are not alone.

"The conditions described in their charges reflect a broader pattern and practice of unlawful employment discrimination against Muslim, Somali, and East African workers at Amazon," the letter to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Minnesota area office reads.

I know where you won't have to worry about all of this so called "preferential treatment". They have flights leaving daily

What, you don't get a lunch break? Do that $hit on your own time.

I don't know about this. If I went to Italy, Egypt, Finland or even Somalia and got shitty treatment I would probably just go back home instead of making a huge deal out of it. Why can't these people have a little common sense?

"The three employees allege Amazon does not offer an adequate space to pray and that employees fear taking time to pray because they would lose time working. "Employees who regularly fell short of the rate — simply because they attempted to observe their religious obligations to pray — faced repercussions such as 'write-ups' that could lead to termination," the letter reads.

They are not there to pray. They are being paid to work. Unless they have some agreement with Amazon that promised certain prayer times and a space, they have nothing to say. The employer isn't under their 'religious obligation'.

And actually, the same goes for people who want to spend the day on their phone texting Mom or visiting with their friends. That is not what they are being paid for.

Employment is an exchange of labor/service for a specified amount of money. It is not some gift or right. You are being paid to provide labor. The time the employer 'buys' is his, not yours.

Pray (or text) on YOUR time, not his.

Guess what. Christians can't stop working on the job to pray either. Dry your eyes and get back to work.

At a former job, non-smokers felt discriminated against because the smokers would often walk outside for a cigarette while the non-smokers continued to work. Obviously this was just as unfair as allowing certain religions to take more breaks.

Northwest Woodsman: Go back to Somalia where you belong in the first place! Problem solved.

9:52- You missed the point entirely. By your idiotic response, employees don't have to work while on the clock, so long as their employer can afford it. So stupid!

11:23 is soooo right, just look at government employees, rather it's local, state or federal, all of them don't do an honest days work.

To add to 12:43 you are incorrect. There are some and maybe a lot of ,"government" workers who do not work. That is not true of all Government workers. The House yes. Please do not but all Government workers in one group unless you have proof! Now to address time for Muslims issue. It happens in the Federal Government all the time not just during Muslim holidays. Yes these Muslims are paid while praying. They ate not charged leave - nothing. They are allowed because it is their religion. I know. I worked for the Government for 30 years. Same goes for smokers. They are paid to smoke.

It's not discrimination. It's called rules. Don't agree with them, then go somewhere else. This is nothing but a desire for them to force us to do their bidding, to get their way. One thing at a time till they have complete control.

Dear 8:12 and other commentors:

You realize that mentality is identical to the British empire when our founding fathers fought against them? Don't like what we are doing, then just live somewhere else? People come to America for FREEDOM. You know, the word we plaster and shout everywhere as if we are the only country to have it. Perhaps we should put an addendum on Land of the Free Home of the Brave*

*does not apply to muslims or any other brown people we decide to blame for our problems.

Allowing someone to practice their religion freely is a fundamental right. The negativity you all express on here is in the minority (thank goodness) and says more about who you are as people and Americans more than anything else. I am willing to bet anything none of you have ever met a Muslim person.

Your mentality mirrors how Jews were treated prior to the atrocities of the 30's and 40's.

Illegal immigrants are not stealing your jobs, politicians are marginalizing the middle and lower class. They are automating so they do not need to give people rights, breaks or fair pay. They convince you that their policies are not the source of the problem, it is the welfare recipient who is directly affecting the rising cost of living. The pharmaceutical companies purposely inflating the cost of drugs is not the reason for ridiculously expensive healthcare its Obama! Let us not think about the future of the American economy or be apprehensive about how much debt we put the nation in; as long as the economy performs well during my presidency so I can take credit for it.

You're all the same sheep you accuse the liberals of being.
