Used my parent's old GE refrigerator like that until I finally broke down and bought a used self defrosting refrigerator (we started out poor). That refrigerator broke after two years and we had to have a $200.00 repair done. You know, that 40 year old GE never was repaired, and was working when we discarded it. Now you pay $800-$2500 for a refrigerator, and you're lucky if it lasts ten years.

Oh, yeah. Putting pans of boiling hot water in there, with a big pot below to catch the melt. It could take hours.
