Ted Cruz Introduces Constitutional Amendment on Congressional Term Limits

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) introduced a constitutional amendment Tuesday that would impose term limits on members of Congress, following up on a proposal made back in December.

“D.C. is broken,” Cruz said in a statement Tuesday evening. “The American people resoundingly agreed on Election Day, and President-elect Donald Trump has committed to putting government back to work for the American people. It is well past time to put an end to the cronyism and deceit that has transformed Washington into a graveyard of good intentions.”

The amendment would limit senators to two terms (12 years total) and representatives to three terms (6 years total), the Washington Examiner reported.

President-elect Donald Trump made it a campaign promise that he would implement term limits on Congress, but it’s unclear if the incoming Trump administration has worked with Congress on the proposal, which was introduced during Congress’ first week in session of the new year.

I hope it passes. The only way to make it work is by grandfathering existing members of congress, then make it apply to new members. We have to show support for this amendment. It's the only way to drain the swamp.
It will require 60 members to pass and - I think - a majority of the house. I would be ok with 4 terms for the house.
Along with this, let's finally limit campaign spending to a pre-set amount.

That sounds fantastic, But is that not the minimum they need to receive their ridicules retirement check and benefits? These should also be addressed also. No citizen of the US can retire and get these types of retirement checks and benefits with just 6 or 12 years of working.

Sounds great but these crooks / liars / con-artist will never pass it because they know they could never work and earn these benefits. They would be cutting their own throats and not allow themselves to act and live like Kings and Queens.

That's why you grandfather EXISTING members. They won't be voting for thier own term limits. Make the limits applicable only to NEW members. No one is going to vote themselves out of office.

It's about time someone put this proposal up. I hope it will pass, but so many crooks in Congress, I'm not so sure. If it it doesn't, then I suggest to have American people Vote on it.

I like the idea but with term limits I can see Congressional service becoming part of one's resume on the way up the corporate ladder, I'm not sure it that's preferable to a professional political class.

You have to do 20 years to be vested and get pensions under 50 or 25 years at any age.

Grandfather in no one. These are the ones who are destroying our Country. How many new ones get voted in? Need to force out these old crooks to do any good with this law.

How about term limiting senior departmental bureaucrats? The entrenched regulators are as much a problem as the career legislators.
