German grocer Lidl opening massive distribution hub in Cecil County

German grocer Lidl is opening an 800,000-square-foot regional headquarters and distribution center in Cecil County, where it plans to invest $100 million as part of its expansion into the U.S.

The newly constructed warehouse in the Principio Business Park near Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 40 is expected to create 100 full-time jobs and open no later than 2018. The project is being developed by Stewart Properties.

Lidl operates about 10,000 stores in 27 countries throughout Europe. As part of its entry into the U.S., the company is scouting for stores from New Jersey to Georgia, including across Maryland. The company plans to open stores by 2018. Lidl is looking to build stand-alone, 36,000-square-foot stores on sites that are at least 3.5 acres with 150 parking spaces.

I very seriously doubt Lidl will come to Salisbury. They are going to Cecil County because of logistics, just like Ikea etc. They want to be close to I95.

36,000 square foot stores. What is that comparable to around here? A small Food Lion or large Giant store? We could use another grocery chain around here. When I looked online to see where the Acme was in Easton, it also showed a Food Lion, Safeway and a Harris Teeter there. How can a little place like Easton have all that choice and we don't here?
