SBYNews Does publish Articles We Disagree With: Tell Republicans in Congress: Don’t Cut Free Lunches for Poor Children

The newest blow aimed at public schools will hit low-income students in the stomach—literally.

Conservative lawmakers are well known for wanting to cut funding to public education. But just remember, every time they take a swing at public school budgets, they hit poor kids.

The newest blow aimed at public schools will hit low-income students in the stomach—literally.

A bill introduced by a Republican in Congress called The Improving Child Nutrition And Education Act does the exact opposite of what it claims to do.

In this case, “improving” children’s nutrition means cutting the availability of federally subsidized lunches to hungry children in public schools.

Specifically, the bill would tighten eligibility restrictions that govern how many schools can take full advantage of the free and reduced price lunch program, potentially cutting off food to thousands of schools and millions of students.

All school lunches receive a subsidy whether free, reduced or paid. The lunch program started after WWII because so many of the recruits suffered from poor nutrition,

I worked in a Worcester Co. school. The very sad fact is that for some of those students the meals they ate at school were the only food they got for the day. I sure hope and pray this does not pass.

These welfare families receive 50 to 60 K per year in benefits most people don't even earn that and don't get free meals at school.

Right there is the problem. The income eligibility guidelines are the same as those who are entitled to receive Medicaid, food assistance, renters assistance so you can be sure that the children receiving these free lunches are already being supplemented by food stamps.

Children in households receiving SNAP, FDPIR and/or TANF benefits are "categorically eligible" for free school meals. This means these children are automatically certified for free meals WITHOUT having to fill out the paper application because of a data exchange between corresponding authority and the school districts.

1044 who do you know receiving that type of benefits. I sure don't know anyone.

They almost all are on some kind of food assistance. That's how it works. When you sign up for benefits the school automatically gives the kids free lunches. The thing is there isn't any allowances made so a family of 5 with 4 in school get the same as a family of 5 with none in school. The republicans are absolutely correct to make cuts w/ this program.

I think you are sadly misinformed 10:44 yes there are those that take advantage of the system but they do not receive that much money. Why make the children suffer because of our governments broken system.

11:22 it can very much add up to that if someone has 2 or more minors in the household. The fed govt alone funds nearly 130 entitlement programs. When you add up Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Medicaid, food stamps, WIC, public housing, utility assistance and the free commodities like milk and cheese a single person household (yes you read that correctly a SINGLE person household averages about $38,000 per year. Keep in mind you get more for each minor child in the household so 11:22 is absolutely correct.

It's not the governments' job to take care of anybody's kids!!! That the responsibility of the 2 that made them!!!

I agree with 12:24. I bet anything the parent(s) of the free lunch kids smoke, drink and probably use drugs. Tells me a story about what is really important to the parent(s).

I believe we need to feed the minds of the children , not their stomachs . The parents or guardians should feed them food.
