SALISBURY — While Worcester County stuck true to its post-Labor Day school start last week, neighboring Wicomico County and most other jurisdictions are not interested in following suit, at least for the next school year.
Last week, the Worcester County Board of Education unanimously approved a 2016-2017 school calendar that once again features a post-Labor Day start with a return date for students and a final day of school on June 16. For at least the last three years, Worcester County has been the only public school district to open after Labor Day, despite a continued effort in the General Assembly to mandate the change for all counties in Maryland.
A bill introduced in the Senate by Senator Jim Mathias and a similar bill introduced in the House co-sponsored by Lower Shore Delegates Mary Beth Carozza and Charles Otto along with 10 others, are just now starting to percolate again in the legislature with committee meetings scheduled for early next month, but already school systems across the state are approving calendars for next year.

The problem with our schools is they bow to the DOJ...The DOJ forces schools to keep violent disruptive students in school ruining the learning environment for all.
Shame on Wicomico for not starting schools after labor day.
Really, it would inconvenience SU? That is their reasoning? What a crock of political crap!
If they would get rid of the ridiculous teacher professional days, and perhaps extend spring break all the while reducing the amount of days off for Christmas, then parents, you know the taxpayers of this county would be happy.
Until then creating "choices" for a school calendar is a waste of time.
@ 7:40 all based on racial fairness even though a group of black youth who aren't raised properly terrorize the rest of the student body they cannot suspend more black kids than white kids.
Of course Wicomico County bases their decisions not on what the people of the county want, but what they want. Worst run county in the state, and it makes sense to start school after Labor Day. In years past this was done, whoever changed it was an idiot. Let the families and the school kids enjoy their summer. This doesn't make sense!
Personally, I believe the school day is to long, especially those getting on a bus at 6:30 in the morning and not returning home until 5:30 at night. Then there is homework which I totally disagree with. In my opinion, Kids would comprehend much more if the school day was shorter! Then I hear the argument about what are we suppose to do with our kids. Well first and foremost teach them right from wrong! Raise your children like my parents. The majority of today's parents would receive an E.
They want your children
