In Maryland, Smith Islanders Find Saving Their Home Is No Piece of Cake

CRISFIELD, Md.—Can you have your cake and island too?

The folks on Maryland’s Smith Island, tucked offshore in the Chesapeake Bay, have tried mightily to save their dwindling archipelago with a distinctive eight-to-twelve layer cake.

The cakes have done great. The island, less so.

Smith Islanders have long baked a cake called the Smith Island Cake, with up to a dozen pencil-thin layers of cake and frosting. And for nearly as long, the island’s economy and population have slumped—to 169 citizens at last estimate.

Take lessons from China. They not only are the worlds best at reclaiming land, but also the best at building islands from scratch. The world's left wingers are fighting their efforts tooth and nail because they want desperately to pursue the global warming issue, and the reclaiming of land is diametrically opposed to their agenda. As difficult as it may be for Smith Islanders to imagine,an across the board Democratic majority will not bode well for them.

The island could be saved with a sea wall and a million cubic yards of soil. But that's not going to happen unless some billionaire buys it.
