Unrest will cost city $20 million, officials estimate

The recent rioting and unrest in Baltimore will cost the city an estimated $20 million, officials said Tuesday.

The expenses — which go before the city's spending board for approval Wednesday — include overtime for police and firefighters, damage to city-owned property and repaying other jurisdictions for police and other assistance.

Henry J. Raymond, Baltimore's finance director, said the city can temporarily cover the costs from its rainy day fund while seeking reimbursement for up to 75 percent from Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This is just the beginning.

the federal gov should tell them to pound sand and not pay a dime for a self induced crisis.

Why not get the money from the same ex-Acorn group now named "MORE" or something like that? They are the ones who paid for and shipped in the Ferguson rioters and probably paid the Baltimore rioters.

Federal Government/FEMA should NOT be giving any money to Baltimore City. The Baltimore City Mayor gave the rioters/protesters the okay to 'destroy'; now she needs to find a way to fix up herown mistake. This is a perfect time for her to take ownership of her misdeeds! The property owners need to be compensated for damages due to destruction, as well as theft, from the City of Baltimore. This would be a perfect "lessons learned" opportunity.

I do not my hard earned tax dollars supporting a incompetent mayor who won an election because of incompetent uneducated voters.

They should not receive a dime from anyone, especially the government. If I was an owner of one of the businesses that was destroyed or vandalized, I would collect my insurance check and get the hell out of dodge. I would leave Baltimore to face their own stupidity. Obviously the citizens screwed themselves, they should be embarrassed. I hope all the businesses refuse to rebuild.

Don't look to Ocean City for it because there broke.

If I were the insurance companies, I'd be suing the mayor and city council for every penny of my customers' losses, plus legal fees.

Not to worry! The 19 yo DA will take care of everything. The State should have built a wall around Baltimore after the 1968 riots and declare the whole city a jail.

We all should make sure Governor Hogan knows we the taxpayers of Maryland are NOT going to fund their temper tantrum. Insurance will pick up the cost for the taxpaying business's that were harmed but beyond that NO GO.

Insurance usually will not pay if the destruction happens during a riot. I agree no tax payer money should go to pay for this at all. Find the people that did the destruction and have them work for free until it is rebuilt.

You will find that Baltimore will take care of itself. They are getting rid of the old guard and replacing all offices with someone of color.

2:48 has the right idea! Same as Chicago, Detroit, LA.

3:33... Well at least they will know how it feels to be discriminated against and they can turn the city around.

Anonymous said...

3:33 that's the problem though. The majority of city government is run by and operated by black people and people are still not happy.Let the city sink or swim

20 million? ?? That's how inept the city officials are if they think it will only cost 20 millions. Wait until the lawsuits from ALL the bissness owners begin. 20 million! !!! What a MARRON.

Is it safe to go to Oriole games? This has to be effecting tourism.

I don't have any problem going in and out of Baltimore...but then again I'm not racist.

Baltimore will not suffer. Balt gets 80% of all the taxes and other revenue collected in Maryland..

Get the money from house of cards FEMA. Lol

It's just property, right? What the heck, the state can always build another casino.

Isn't FEMA the same agency that issues/collects flood insurance that is now sky high due to them redoing the flood plain maps?

stephanie should pay for her part in this.

Most insurance policies specifically exclude "riots", which is ridiculous.

But these weren't riots, it was merely "unrest".

Take the money from WIC, SNAP, Section 8 housing, Obamaphone bills, etc. Those are the ones who did the dirty deeds as let them feel the financial pain.
