Washington County BOE proposing to assign almost every student a computer

The Washington County Board of Education will hear more information Tuesday about a digital-learning initiative that could put a computer in the hands of almost every one of Washington County Public Schools' more than 22,300 students by fall 2017.

The idea is to phase in the devices over three years, starting with the upcoming school year, Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said last week. Once fully implemented, the cost of leasing the computers is expected to cost approximately $3.5 million a year, he said.

School system officials first pitched the idea publicly to the board in January, but the board asked for more information so it can get a clearer understanding of how the plan would affect students and teachers.

School system officials are asking the board if it will make the initiative a budget priority, Wilcox said in a phone interview.

School districts in more educated areas of the country already do this....probably will never happen on the shore.

It should happen here on the shore. I certainly hope it does, and soon. Mr. Culver, what do you say about this? We need our children to have the best tools for learning & this is the wave of the future.

commendable

They need to have a policy about what to do when kids take computers home to do homework or research and the computer never comes back. Making them pay is ludicrous if they're on free lunch and all the rest.

People need to climb out of the box. We continue to build libraries that nobody goes to except to listen to a story being told. We continue to build and state Post Offices when you can email or buy stamps at the grocery stores.

Post Offices should become information and communication centers with phones and computers that the American public can use, Students INCLUDED.

Put the technology in a Post Office where they can be used 24/7 not in a classroom for just a few hours a day. We have TEACHERS in schools to teach. Replace the libraries with former Post Offices as the go to for research for the students.

Big deal, you'll lose you grocery circular and coupons!

There are many studets that are totally irresponsible. Cant even bring paper to class. They will never take care of a computer. Then when you have to give them an assignment using the computer, they will not do it. Actually they wouldnt do it anyways. Makes no difference.
