In June 2012 a House committee had voted toend funding for inspections of horse slaughterhouses in the U.S. but not much has happened since then. This new measure, the Safeguard American Food Exports Act, or SAFE, brings that debate back into public light.

Federal Legislation Would Ban Export Of Horses For Slaughter, Protect Public From “Toxic Meat”
While U.S. consumers have been sitting fairly pretty over here during Europe’s horsemeat scare, the hullabaloo has served to stir up some action stateside as well. New federal legislation is seeking to ban the export of American horses for slaughter, reinstate a ban on slaughtering them here and also protect the public from eating “toxic” horsemeat.

So, why can't we eat horsemeat? How is it toxic? It may be tougher because we keep them til they're old, but toxic?
What's wrong with horse meat? If prepared right, it's delicious.
Everything in this country is bassackwards.
The Bible says not to eat meat from animals with split hooves and eat meat from those animals whose hooves aren't split.
Horses would seem to be okay and have indeed been eaten before in this country.
But we view horses as pets, tools and entertainment, not food.
When people get hungry enough they won't care where the meat comes from, even if human.
Then when meat runs out, they will eat grass.
"The Bible says not to eat meat from animals with split hooves and eat meat from those animals whose hooves aren't split."
I haven't read that fictional gem in a while, but I believe Leviticus 11:3 says "You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud."
I disagree with their take on rabbits and pigs, though. Too tasty, so call me a sinner.

I said it was bassackwards. lol.
