A LETTER SENT TO THE WICOMICO COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS

REF: Joe Alberos posting from a person about the WICOMICO COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY 7-14-12

Titled----Letter to the Editor.

It appears from reading, the situation at the Humane Society has gone from bad to worse ! I personally don't like my tax money given them & not being accounted for by legal accountant! Mr. Fitzgerald's being related to a Board Member is definitely NOT a healthy situation for the people of this County either.

Accountability has been needed there & is still needed.

Who appoints the Board of Directors anyway & what do they do to assure "things" are being done correctly?

I think the ones on the board got rid of term limits and they stay on as long as they want to. Any one of them can nominate a new director and the rest vote on the nominees. Two have left in the last month (EJ Foxx and someone else) and another one has sent a letter of resignation. That will leave six directors, with four of them from Pittsville. One of the board members said there can be up to fifteen directors.

That place has been corrupt and is an embarassment to the name of Humane Societies across the nation. Nothing Humane or decent happening there.

Mr. Fitzgerald is married to Ms. Gordy's niece so technically is not related to her by blood. Whether his being hired with no qualifications was helped by that relationship is being discussed by many in the county.

any non profit has to complete an annual irs form which is public record and be completed by an accountant--a simple solution is to look for that online or ask for a copy instead of getting excited

He wasn't related by blood to the lady that works at the town office in Pittsville either. It was just his mother in law. Seems he can only get a job if family helps him out. You have to wonder........

The counel needs to address the situation and find a suitable person with animal and business qualifications to be hired there. The county definitely needs more then one part time animal control officer. The county pays close to $250000 a year and they say they can't afford two officers or even one fulltime. Plus there needs to be accountability for every dollar spent. Sadly I don't think much has ever gone to making the lived of the county animals any better.

The council can only withhold their share of funds. The Hs is not owned or run by them. Don't you get it. There have been 2 substantial ongoing donations from T least 2 deceased people that I Personally know about and that is what is keeping them afloat with salaries not the county'seasly few dollars!

So , If this Director has gotton rid of the Accountants, as stated then He is now the Accountant for the HS ----is that correct??
The County really needs to have more
input there with the tax payers money that's being given to them & This County definately needs More Then One Animal Control Officer!!!!!!!! The Directors salary needs to be cut----it's to much money for that position----especailly carrying No Experience!!!

County Council you need to take more control of the situation out there----it's one ongoing problem that doesn't cease to end!!!

So, being non profit, the Director isn't allowed to do as has been stated & has to hire an accountant----is this correct?

Everyone needs to contact the IRS as they are a non profit and cal for an audit of their funding. With 501(c)3 non profit status every dollar should be accounted for.

If you think this is not a healthy situation by Mr. Fitzgerald being related to a Board Member what about the deal at the Landfill? Mr. Whitelock (Landfill Superintendent) is now living with the in house Account who works at the Landfill and nothing has been said although a lot of the employees are talking about it. Mr. Whitelock was at the Landfill during the original scandal, with him having a lot of say as to what Landfill money is used for and with the account taking care of the books looks to me like this is the ideal setup for another scandal down the road, what's wrong with this county?? Mr. Pollitt & Mr. Redden know about this but nothing has been done.

The county actually owns the building where the HS is based. They rent it to them for $1.00. Seems to me if things are going badly there (which they are) that the county counsel should reconsider letting them have the building and look for another Good animal rescue group take over the building and animal control. There are many other non profit groups that I'm sure would love to do so and would do a much better job.

I think there is a lease agreement for the $1 and it goes for many more years. I'm not positive about that tho.
Maybe we need to call the Humane Society tomorrow and make an appointment to talk to Mr. Fitzgerald either later this week or one day next week to ask our questions and get some answers.

The Humane Society and the Board of Directors answer to no one except each other. Quite convient, don't you think. Look out Wicomico County the Land fill all over again. No accountability

It is really amazing that two individuals who were fired for what I understand was because they didn't do their job! Yet now they are repeatedly bad mouthing someone else, or the Humane Society. It is ashame that our society allows people like this to continue to rant and rave about nonsense. Who cares who the director is married too! And unless you have some hard evidence of allocations of wrong doings elsewhere, back off! Obvisously you had the opportunity to do the best you could to make the Wicomico Humane Society the best around.....so what happened? If you were that good and did what you were required to do....You'd still have a job! As far as I'm concerned...I have far better things to worry about then who is married to whom, and the last time my kids and I were there, which by the way was yesterday afternoon, the shelter was clean and I saw no signs of mistreated or neglected animals. The entrance way was clean and the cat bowls were filled. To be honest, it was actually cleaner yesterday then when we were there back in Febrauary. So that alone speaks volumes to me.
As for being a non-profit...there are requirements you must meet and guidelines that must be followed.
