MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner with her arms behind her back after the girl threw a tantrum and the police chief defended the action as a safety measure.
The girl's family demanded Tuesday that their central Georgia city change policy so that other children aren't treated the same way. They say the child was shaken up by the ordeal.
While it's unusual to see a young child handcuffed in school, it's not unheard of. School officials around the nation have wrestled with the issue of when it's appropriate to call police on a student.
Salecia Johnson, 6, was accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing books and toys in an outburst Friday at Creekside Elementary School in Milledgeville, according to a police report.

You can thank crazy parents for this one....because of law suits, and accusations, educators will not risk their job or reputation, they let the cops handle it.

It's about time something was done. The WCBOE and its admin are doing absolutely nothing. Elementary schools serving the Church Street area are the absolute worst. After a few days with my child enrolled at one of the area's K-2 schools, I had to remove my child. Thank goodness for special permission. This is ridiculous! Lord help these schools, children, and teachers, and God Bless the Georgia police and admin for actually doing something!!! Maybe next time, the child won't flip out and throw things at other people! As an adult, they would have been thrown in jail anyway!!! Let's get this message across early!
This is unfortunate ...unless there is a medical problem, actions such as these are a result of parenting. Sadly kids need parents to teach morals, values etc. I sat in a Dr's ofc yesterday and a maybe 2 2and a half yr old spent an hour running, jumping, yelling, dropping, kicking chairs, peoples feet etc. NO ONE said a word. Except me, I calmly and politely said I wasn't feeling well and it feel on deaf ears. This uncontrolled behavior is not always ADHD or other diagnosis, it is just a matter of NO CONTROL. So, if you have to handcuff, go for it.
I here when they put the handcuffs on you it makes you realize you are no longer in control or you have been out of control for sometime now. I hope I ever have to find out. I think I am too much of a girly girl to go to jail.
I really wan tto sit here and curse the police for cuffing a 6 year old,I would think they know better. But honestly it is a sign of what the times have done to our public. If you were to grab a kid the wrong way in today's times you could be facing a huge law suit. If the girl was just handcuffed I can understand, taking her to the station and all is another matter.

Sorry I disagree. What was their choice? Let her go back in the class room and possibly hurt another child? Send her home with her parents? It doesn't seem like the parents have any control of her either. She needs to be taught that there are consequences for her actions/bad behavior.
Ok I'm going to say it. If that was my child doing that, I would have wanted the school to call me right away, so I could come down there and bust her behind. That would put a stop to it. I'm old school and I'm here to tell you my son would NEVER act that way in school or anywhere in public for that matter. He knows better!
Kids act this way because parents can't touch their children like we were touched.if I acted that way in school my principal wouls spank me .that was a warm up for my parents turn.now days if you even redden a kids butt your getting investigated by social services or going to jail.I was truly scared to mess up.my parents would go ballistic. But now kids can't be touched spanked whatever you wanna call it.and thats why kids act like this.that's why kids tote guns to school and kill.that's why......
It's about time we take control back into the parent hands/ belt and out of the governments.
I bet that girl behaved the day she was able to go back to class, too.

Speaking from experience in seeing these types of behaviors in the classroom...probably not!
Police officers are wimps. They can place handcuff on a 6 yearold for a tantrum. But, they could not do the right thing when a man killed a 17 year old boy.
