Last month, Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration made its final proposal for a massive toll hike that will more than triple the price to cross the Bay Bridge, from $2.50 to a whopping $8. Even larger toll increases are planned for trucks.
The bridge has already fully paid for itself and its maintenance, and even generated a $10 million surplus last year. That means that these proposed new toll increases are not user fees -- they are tax hikes. I oppose these hikes because, in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, they will hurt Lower Shore job creators, businesses and families.
The reason for this massive tax hike is simple: The state spends way too much on mass transit projects that lose money -- and is planning to build even more. During his re-election campaign last year, O'Malley promised to build yet another urban mass transit project around Washington, even though there never was a funding source to pay for it.
Now, with the election over, the governor wants to divide Maryland by forcing the Eastern Shore -- a place where he did not receive many votes -- to pay for urban transit projects in places where he received most of his votes.
Whether it's a toll hike or the proposed gas tax increase, those of us who drive on the Shore will be paying for riders on light rail in Washington and Baltimore who aren't paying the cost of their transportation.
The result of these toll hikes will be devastating to our economy and will destroy jobs on the Lower Shore. I've spoken to folks in the poultry industry who rely heavily on trucks that cross the Bay Bridge every day to transport grain and finished products. Ocean City businesses depend on tourists from the western shore to meet their bottom lines. Families that fill up gas tank every day need gasoline from refineries across the bay.
If we triple the amount it costs to cross the bridge, it will mean higher unemployment, higher prices on the Shore and less money in your pocket.
Although this tax hike is being proposed at the state level, Maryland does depend on the federal government for millions of dollars in transportation money. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have spoken to the chairman to investigate whether options exist to prevent Maryland from raising these tolls on rural areas. Why should we send hundreds of millions of federal highway dollars to Maryland when it turns around and taxes drivers to build mass transit instead of roads?
I will continue to stand up for you even when the big spenders in Annapolis won't. On Thursday, the O'Malley administration will hold a public hearing on the toll increases at Stephen Decatur Middle School in Berlin. I urge you to participate in these hearings and have your voice heard. Thanks for the opportunity to serve you.

So Andy how much did this cost the taxpayers???
Andy has used more of OUR money in his first 3 months in office then Kratovil ever did on BS mailers and communication pieces!
This guy has got to GO!
Go to his official website and you will not find what Andy stands for and or what he has done to date for us,only him asking for your money on his next campaign!!
I love the anonymous comments attacking Andy Harris. Not a man amungst you.
Are you afraid Andy will retaliate against you? Probably so, if one of you is actually Frank Kratovil or Chuck Cook. LOL
The Eastern Shore finaly has someone in Congress fighting for YOU. Of course you've said NOTHING about his standing up against the toll hike. You just want to make people believe he's not doing a good job, yet you offer no facts. Typical of wet pants liberals.
Read the article in DT today about the post card he mailed to MD Republicans concerning Bay Bridge hike. I was a receiver of one of the colorful post cards and I told my spouse at the time that Harris had no business using his federal office mailing post cards for Md concerns. I wondered how much this mailing cost us tax payers. I am not a man, nor am I afraid of retaliation from Harris, as I e-mailed him my opinion on his spending federal dollars on this mailing and than I signed my name.
Your retaliation against folks who disagree with you is why I never sign my name when I comment to you.
You are a person I am quite leary of, so I choose to sign as anonymous. You always ridicule ones who speak an opinion different than yours.
anonymous 4:55, so it's ok for you to voice your opinion but not ok for me to voice mine?
Kratovil sent out one mailer after the next, even going so far as stealing one of my photos without permission for fundraising, but Andy is a bad guy.
Look, every one is welcome to their opinion, I may just not agree and I will voice my opinion.
There are plenty of things I disagree with Andy harris on but one thing I can assure you of, especially over Kratovil, he will serve the people of his district better than anyone else out there.
The Daily Times does not like Andy so they will go after him every opportunity they get.
If YOU do not like my opinion, don't return. I'll add, I don't buy that you are a woman and or afraid of retaliation on my behalf. It's an old con in my opinion in the hopes of directing people to think you are someone else. Again, perhaps you're Frank himself.
This is a State Run and Controlled Bridge. Seems like our congressmen, Republican or Democrat don't follow the Ole Eastern Shoreism..
" Amongst you tend your business, amongst us tend ours.
This ain't his Deal, that one term democrat did the same thing
"Read the article in DT today about the post card he mailed to MD Republicans concerning Bay Bridge hike."
Excuse me? The postcard announced a hearing about the hike which is 7/14 @5:30PM at Stephen Decatur Middle School. Why do you think he mailed this to ONLY Republicans?
This increase affects mostly residents on this side of the bridge who work on the other side but it also affects businesses that rely on customers from the Western side.
Because of the Administration in Annapolis:
1. Employers on the Shore are financially rewarded to hire non Americans.
2. 10% of Slot revenue from the Shore goes to Baltimore City Schools.
3. Nearly none ($156K?) of the increased alcohol tax from the Eastern Shore STAYS on the Eastern Shore.
Kratovil should be ashamed to even claim to be an Eastern Shore resident with policies like this that he supported.
Interesting that 2 of the anti-Harris comments are almost verbatim from the Grapevine today and the 3rd is a closely paraphrased copy. Looks like the anti-Harris crew is well organized.
The bay bridge is wholly located within Harris' district and he should rightfully take a stand on this unnecessary $$$$ grab by the state. There is absolutely no justification for the toll increases. The bridge made about a $10 million dollar profit last year despite all the expensive improvements.
This entire toll increase is nothing more than a ploy to subsidized mass transit and highway projects in the Baltimore - Washington metro corridor on the backs of the eastern shore. Everything is going to cost more because of these toll increases.
This amounts to a 1/4 billion dollar tax increase without legislative action. The bay bridge should be administered as a individual entity, separate from all other transit projects and MDDOT. All income generated should go to maintenance and upkeep of the bridge only and tolls should be set accordingly.
The wholly unjustified increase will hurt everyone on the shore. Thank you Congressman Harris for looking out for the interests of the first congressional district!
I sincerely hope that every local, county and state council person, commissioner, delegate and senator will turn out to protest this job killing toll increase.
Yea, we'll see...if Harris keeps this increase from passing then I admire him, if he's just campaigning still with tax payers money, then i don't care for him one bit. The proof will come next year at the bay bridge tolls.
I'm so sick of Md.'s B.S.
We've quickly turned down California road.
How anyone can think $8 is a good idea is way beyond me.
They just need to raise the light-rail fares, those daily gov employee riders can most certainly pay for that.
Raise the Metro while your at it too.
