Md. Catholics Stand Up For Illegal Immigrant In-State Tuition

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Opponents of Maryland’s immigrant in-state tuition law are just 8,000 signatures away from putting the issue on the ballot. Local leaders of the Catholic Church take a stand against the petition.

Kelly McPherson explains why Maryland Catholics won’t sign.

There’s a new voice in the intensifying debate over giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants living in Maryland.

The Maryland Catholic Conference is saying “a statewide referendum on the issue of immigration will have a needlessly divisive impact on our state, and we urge Catholics and all Marylanders to refrain from signing on to this petition effort.”

State legislators passed the controversial bill this year, but conservative lawmakers are trying to stop it from becoming law by gathering signatures to force a referendum.

I'm Catholic and my entire family is as well and we signed the petition and had many of our friends do the same. This is one of the areas the Catholic church is dead wrong

I was raised Catholic and even attended Catholic schools but I've been fed up with the Catholic Church for years. It seems to me that anymore they are operating as a business and their bottom line is the Almighty Dollar. This would explain their position on this matter. Alot of illegal hispanics attend the Catholic Church.

I am Catholic and I totally disagree with the Catholic churches position on this? Who made the decision? Did they ask how the majority of the Parishioners feel about the issue?

I'm also Catholic. and this is the ongoing problem with the church leadership! They are clueless! There's a big difference between supporting humanitarian causes and breaking the law!

I am not Catholic. Illegal immigration is immoral on so many fronts. It would be funny, if not so sad, that one reason given not to sign is the ensuring debate would cause dissention in Maryland. That's what the influx of illegals has been doing, that's WHY this petition. To push something undergroud is not healthy for democracy. Free and open debate is healthy.
