Salisbury's American Legion Baseball Needs Coaches – Now!

Salisbury American Legion Post 64 baseball is in great need of experienced coaches for the 2010 season.

38 games are scheduled, half against Legion teams from the Eastern Shore, the other half against East Coast Legion teams from Maryland to Upstate New York and beyond.

Our Blue Sox team has a long tradition of outstanding ball playing, with a record of 304-98, bringing home no fewer than eight Eastern Shore District titles in its last twelve seasons. Since 1998, every one of the 114 Blue Sox team players has entered college, over half of those played NCAA level ball, and three went on to play professionally.

Nationally, there are about 5000 American Legion teams in all 50 states. Begun in 1925, American Legion Baseball found sponsorship by Major League Baseball in 1928, and has kept that sponsorship ever since. 75% of all MLB players played on a Legion team as a teenager. Over 50 of those players are now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. More about the league and the team HERE (http://www.post64baseball.org/).

Players of ages 15 to 19, born in 1992 or later are eligible for the 2010 season. They must be students of Parkside, Bennett, Wicomico or Stephen Decatur high schools or a private school in Wicomico County. Tryouts are scheduled for Sunday, May 2nd, at a location to soon be announced.

Players, former players and parents of players know just how important having a great coach is to developing a player's potential, a team's spirit and taking them to play a winning season.
If you think you have what it takes, give Salisbury Legion Post 64 team manager Gordy Kissner a call at 443-735-3329, or email at ggkissner@verizon.net.

Gordy Kissner was an OUTSTANDING person and coach. Holloman is the best replacement. He knows his stuff and the kids respect his knowledge of the game. If he doesn't, Figgs from JMB would do a good job. Maybe they can tag team and co coach. Please, not the SD guy!!!

If SD is the guy who had a kid playing then heck no....they quit...returned...quit....tried to return.

He doesn't know how to talk to the kids and only tries to look out for his own son's agenda.

Kissner IS the best!

I think that Figgs and Taylor/Taylor from JMB would be a great TRIO!

Come on Joe, no one has time for the youth of Delmarva. We're too busy buying parking lots for the Wicomico YOUTH and Civic Center. What ya wanna bet there will be a building on that lot w/ an alcohol license. "Sorry Mr. Woodcock."

Hey my best choice would be Golnick, Hollamon, and Yobst from Parkside. They have a good program for the high school, and I think that it will work for the ESBL.

I think they are asking for volunteers to step forward...Not people volunteering names, when someone else volunteers a name, that person may not be interested....

What about Mardela students?

Anonymous 4;23Pm I emailed the person in the article and asked this question to them...this comment box will get no results..it could be as usual, they forgot that there is a Mardela High School in Wicomico county, so hopefully it is just an oversite.....

1:20 ESBL is not the same as AL ball.....also 4:23, Mardela plays for the Cambridge league (it doesn't go by county boundaries but rather AL post and their locations)

Anonymous 5:20 pm...thank you for the information

So 5:20 youre saying that Berlin/OC is closer to post 64 than Mardela? Nah they dont want Mardela players. They've deemed them "not good enough". They dont fit into the SBY clique.

LOL 5:14 Wouldn't be the first time we've been forgotten about.

Thanks for the info 5:20.

You'd think with so many out of work more would have time to volunteer for these kinds of things. But it doesn't seem to be that way.

Nobody at SSU would want to volunteer their time?? Amazing! Come on people, these kids are our future Baltimore Orioles or New York Giants or whatever, do what you can now for them and they will make you proud in the future.

I hope somebody comes up to the plate on this - they've had some great years and always a great team.

5:20, Regarding your statement you may be right, but the Post 64 team plays both leagues. I had two very good friends play for them. They played all over the east coast for AL. ESBL plays everyone on the shore.

7:30 No, my son has played the last three years - they do not play for both leagues (as a matter of fact only one player two years ago tried to play for both but found it didn't work because of the committment both took). Go to post64 website and you will see a schedule - they don't play "all over the east coast" we just play a few out of the area teams that are friends with Coach Kissner. Better yet, call him and he'll be able to validate any of our comments or concerns.

High school Head Coaches are not allowed to coach American Legion baseball due do a school sports rule.
