Salisbury Boxing

Hey Joe, I just wanted to let you know that Salisbury U junior, Bobby Hammond advanced to the semi-finals of the 156 lb division at the regional 2009 National Collegiate Boxing Championships at Rosecroft Raceway last night. I don't know all the details, but if he wins again tonight, he will fight in the National finals on April 2-4 at the Univ of Maryland. My father is there with the family this weekend and Hal Chernoff(sp) and Fernando are helping him as well.

Bobby Jr. has been trying to get Salisbury Univ to recognize boxing as a club sport, but the school has denied his attempts. With the success of Fernando and the Main St gym, it would be a great time to get more kids interested in boxing and off the streets. Maybe if SBYNews can do a little profile it will help his cause.

The pictue was printed in the Ocean City Today paper in a feature by LISA CAPITELLI. http://www.oceancitytoday.net/news/2009/0320/sports/051.html

I guess the University does not want the students knocking the hell out of each other.

Unfortunately Bobby lost a hard fought decision last night, but hopefully he'll be back next year with a full set of teammates from Salisbury U.

Insurance would probably be expensive.

Insurance is covered by USA boxing
National Collegiate Boxing is governed by USA boxing,The college would have zero expense. the guy that beat Bobby was from ARMY and was last years 165 lb National Champion.

Insurance is not an issue
it is included in boxers fees thru USA boxing which is the governing body for the National Collegiate Boxing Assoc.
