Public Input Session on Future Needs of Mardela Middle and High 7 p.m. March 26
A Public Input Session on the future needs for Mardela Middle and High will be held at 7 p.m. March 26 at MMHS.
As part of the FY2010 Superintendent's Task Force on Long Range Planning, a sub-committee has been established to study the future needs of Mardela Middle and High School. The sub-committee includes parents, students, staff, administrators, board members and community representatives. This sub-committee will be looking at current issues as well as data projected into 2018. As part of this important effort, the sub-committee is hosting a public input session to gather information from the Westside community regarding thoughts and ideas for the future of MMHS.
Parents/guardians of students who will attend MMHS in the future (today's kindergartner will be a sixth-grader in 2014) are also encouraged to attend. For additional information, please contact the Wicomico County Public School Facility Services Department at 410-677-4492.

We should close the school down. Build a new one in Salisbury and bus the kids there.

We need a whole new school in general!!! By the time my class graduated (2005), we completely eliminated being allowed to carry our backpacks in the halls because thats how over-crowded it was (and still is!). Adding the 6 graders to it a few years ago just added to the problem even more because we didnt have enough room from the get-go. Teachers use carts to go from one classroom to another since they do not have a room of their own and use another teachers room during that period because it just happens to be empty. We also didnt have enough desks in some classrooms because they are that overcrowded, and many kids have to share lockers because they dont have enough in the halls. Some rooms have sufficient heat/AC; other rooms arent so lucky and use chicken fans. There are many many many issues that the school needs major improvement on; we never receive it because everyone forgets that there are 4 schools in wicomico county and not 3 and were always left out.
11:39am, just because kids are over-crowded in the halls doesn't justify tearing down the school. I agree they need to add another building where the portables are- maybe or add another floor. Tearing down a building that is deteriorated like Bennett makes sense, but not a perfectly good building.
Great!! Glad for Mardela, Maybe Delmar Elementary can be next on the list. There are 14 - yes 14 portables at the school and nearly 1000 students.
9:46- Why should Mardela be closed? It is the best kept little secret in Wicomico. Yeah thats right its not in Dorchester. But thats ok, we are not forgotten when it comes to test scores and graduation rates. Mardela has been sh*t way too long now. Its time for our kids to be afforded the same luxuries as the 3 city schools. Status quo is bs. We deserve better. I'm on the task force and I will do my best to make sure things become more equitable.
